I just got this DVD out of the library. This is some amazing stuff.
P&T travel to three different countries to find street magicians. In China, they discover that after banning street magic as "counter-revolutionary" the government has now authorized a school for magicians. (Seems to me to be kinda sad. Learning the Chinese Rings by rote. And everyone seems proud of the fact that they add NOTHING to the routines they've learned. Penn mentions that before the school, the only way to learn magic was from a master. And you performed exactly the way the master had which was exactly the way HE'D been taught! It's nice for perserving traditions... but usually the only things that need preservation are dead things.) Egypt is next and they go in search of the "Galli-Galli" men. Finding that street magic is in sadly short supply in Egypt. They also go to the tomb where the hyrogliphics (sorry) appear to show a performance of the Cups and Balls. (The article they display at the opening of this section indicates that the 'glyph in question is in a section of the tomb dedicated to games and not performances. So they seem to believe it's NOT the C&Bs. *cy* It's possible that C&B are derived from this game however and the link has been lost in time. After all, how many people know the origin of magicians pulling rabbits out of hats?) India is up next and I haven't finished the DVD yet, but it seems fascinating.

The 'glyph' in question is among agricultural renderings and by non-magic scholars is considered to show two people molding bread. No balls are seen and no other games are evident in the area.
