A barrel of water is about half full (or half empty depending on your point of view!)

You and your friend have two small jugs of equal but indeterminate capacity. The barrel has a removable top and it is possible for you and your friend to lift the barrel.

Without using any other measuring device, dipstick etc. How do you determine whether the barrel is less than half full, exactly half full or more than half full?
Obviously, it is difficult to tell with certainty, just by looking in the barrel!

This is just a random guess, if the 2 people tilt the barrel on its edge so it balances so that the top of the barrel is directly above the bottom of the barrel ,put a jug either side of the barrel base, if the jugs are the same size then the barrel touching the jugs will be like a set of scales upside down.because the barrels shape (ignore the roundness) is 90, degree angle.

Tilt it until the water touches the rim of the barrel and see if you can see the inside of the bottom of the barrel in this position.

Would that work regardless of width and height of barrel?

Yes - providing that the diameter of the top is equal to that of the bottom and it either has vertical sides or is at least symetrical (like a barrel).
