I'm pretty new to card magic (I prefer sleight of hand and set pieces). However, I'd like to add some card tricks to the close-up portion of my shows.
I'm considering purchasing Oz's Born to Perform Card Magic DVD from Penguin. Has anyone seen it? If so can you recommend it? I'm open to suggestions for other DVDs as well. Thanks |

You will find varying opinions about Oz, the Born to Perform DVD and Penguin.
I found this DVD extremely useful when I started doing card magic. Oz, in my opinion, is a good teacher. Too bad one has to buy it from Penguin. Their ethics have been highly questioned on this forum. José.

Regardless of what anyone says about Penguin, Oz is an excellent teacher, and this would be a great introduction to card magic.

I got this dvd as my intro to card magic and love it. There is a ton of info on here and oz is really a good teacher. Even though I don't really support penguin I would still check this dvd out.

Take this from someone who's been in magic for YEARS. If you're new to card magic, buy a book! SO much more material for your money. Most of what has been put of videos for....well, forever, is just rehashing of material from books.
Buy "The Royal Road to Card Magic," from a reputable dealer mind you, and you'll be able to perform everything (useful) and more that's on that video!

Books contain a lot more detailed information than DVD's, however, there are some things that are hard to put in writing but easy to show. Both have there value. While I use both books and DVD's, I tend to be a more visual learner. This is an old issue that has been covered many times on the Café, and there is no "best" medium for everyone--it is all a matter of what works best for you. I second what others have said--I found Oz' DVD helpful when I was starting out, and I think he does a good job.

For a beginner, I find this DVD as a great source. The routines are powerful and there is a very nice false cut that I use repeatedly. There are many DVD's and books out there (on the routines on this DVD)but as for BTP you can't go wrong for the price.

It's not a horrible DVD, but there are so many BETTER resources that it's hard to recommend. I've noticed that most people who strongly recommend BTP don't have much else to compare it to. But for beginner DVDs, Richard Kaufman's Basic Card Technique is miles ahead of BTP. And I do agree that books are much better overall. Maybe get the Kaufman DVD just so you can see how things are performed, but a book will have ten times the content that a DVD will. With Born to Perform, you only learn four so-so effects. But with the first volume of Card College, you'll learn dozens of very powerful effects, plus much better descriptions of the basic sleights. In fact, if you really need the visuals, your best resource by far would be the ebook versions of Card College.

I did learn from Oz'a BTP DVD when I first learned magic. It's not a bad DVD but now that I know a little more about magic, I have to say ebook versions of Card College and/or R. Paul Wilson Royal Road To Card Magic DVDs are very good investment.

This dvd is great for the price(30 bucks,1 packet trick can cost you more than that). I have been doing magic for 12 years now and just recently turned my 35 year old brother onto magic just from showing him this dvd. He bought a copy, broke his fingers on this material for 2 months, and now has just moved on to the "royle road to card magic book". There is just so much material on here for the tiny bit of money you have to spend to get it. It goes from the basic handeling skills, to an average advanced skill level (counting the flurishes of course). And than teaches you 4 different routines to do with the material you've just learned. Not to mention 2 of them routines David Blain performed in his street magic special that aired on national television (not the greatest magician, but diceptive). This material is a perfect start for a begginer, and a perfect price for them just in case they decide magic is not for them. You people need to realize, this material looks extreemly difficult in a begginers eye's. when my brother bought this dvd he thought it would take him a year before actually performing a routine. It took him 2 months. He is now doing tricks that a professional magician did on national tv to wow a nation of laymen. My 2 favorite fa!se shuffles that I use more than any other came off of this dvd (nice, flashy, quick, and confusing). Come on!! 30 bucks, that's pocket change compared to what other dvds cost to get you started. The 4 routines in this dvd are crowd favorits at my shows. Expecially OZ's version of the ambitious card routine,i get a lot of laughs out of that one. Of course there are better dvd's out there, but for the price you can't beat it. And Oz is one of the better teachers I have came across in a long time. Thank You!!! 'PIZ'

I would definatley recommend this to a person starting in card magic.
But like others have said, there are many others out there too. I also recommend: -Royal Road to card Magic -Expert Card Technieque -Card College Those are just for card magic though. If you want all types of magic, I suggest: -Tarbells Course in Magic -Mark Wilsons Complete Course in magic -Henry Hay's Amature Magicians Handbook Good luck! |

I believe card college cost more then 30 bucks brother,i could be wrong. I'll check on that when I'm done with this. All I was saying is that I learned some good stuff from BTP that to me is priceless. Like his false shuffles and many different flurishes that I never did or seen before in my prior dvd puchases. And I also learned alternative methodes to some of the routines that I already did prior to my purchase. To me, I would have payed double the price,no joke. Take care 'Piz'

I bought this DVD for my nephew who I had influenced into magic. He wanted something to let him hit the ground running. I hadn't seen it at the time and had heard decent things about it. After ordering it for him I couldn't help but pop it open and watch it. I have to say that I was amazed (and thrilled for my nephew) at the amount of material the DVD covered. It starts with the basics (mechanics grip, DL, etc.) and moves right on into some intermediate and advanced moves like Daryl's hotshot cut (which is actually an Oz version of it, the Daryl version is much simpler to perform). He demonstrates a few staple effects of card magic as well like ambitious card and a two card transpo.
Overall, I'd say that his DVD's are not forintermediate or advanced cardicians but if your just starting off you could do a lot worse. Consequently, I bought the DVD for my nephew a couple of years ago and he has gotten quite good since then. Although I also supplemented the Oz DVD with a brand spanking new copy of "royal road to card magic" which he has supposedly read cover to cover. So I'm not sure if it was the DVD, the book, or both. I started learning from RRTCM as I'm sure many on here had as well. |

Card college is a set of dvds that for $34.95 you can perchase just one of the dvds from the set. This is not a set,so there is no need to compare. 'Piz'

I'm finding that the perfect book/dvd combo is probably the Paul Wilson version of 'Royal Road to Card Magic' on DVD (5 DVDs) and the text itself.
Card College, of course -- at least the first two volumes. And I'd put my own recommendation in for Harry Lorayne's 'Close Up Card Magic' (the book). Lots of magic in that book! |
