Joe Rindfleisch has a great pen through a deck of cards trick without a gimmick that you can do with a borrowed pen.

Hmm... I've never had that happen to me (yet). I have a duplicate pen and, earlier on in my routine, I have a spectator sign an object with it. Because they've handled it there is no suspicion on the pen. I switch the pens in advance of the effect.
So, everyone thinks the pen is normal. Suspicion is going to be on the bill instead. I encourage this further by awkardly handling the bill (as if I'm doing something fishy with it). When I'm done this effect, everyone seems to want to examine the bill and not the pen. This allows me a chance to put the pen in my pocket and switch it back for the normal pen if necessary. Kent

Same goes for me...that's what make the Cornelius "Pen Thru Anything" better than the "Perfect Pen"...never been called on the switch. OR...you can do (I think it was David Harkey's) a borrowed pen through borrowed bill...works better with a pencil, though, if you have one around.

I've been performing pen through bill for years and have never had that happen to me either. If it did happen, I'd probably take the pen and vanish it via the Flipstick move, or just give one of my canned humorous responses like, "Sorry, I don't take requests."

I also have been performing pen through anything for many years and never had someone say use my pen, and as Larry Davidson said it good to have a Contingency plan for what they pull out on you.
I like to do cigarette thru quarter and that’s one that the spectators will pull out a quarter and say “Here use my quarter” and that’s when I do signed quarter appears in my watch. Always stay in control of the Magic Maro

IMO, Cigarette through quarter should ALWAYS be done with the spectator's quarter. Or at least they THINK it's their quarter.
As a contingency for pen through anything, you can always prepare an impromptu version of pen through bill and then you CAN use their pen.

By the way, this topic was moved from it's original location. I assume no one here is performing cigarette through quarter for "the little darlings!"

Always when doing it with the spectator's quarter I still get others that say “do it with my quarter” AND the only reason I bring the quarter effect up to SAY that’s the ONLY effect that I get that comments on.
magicbob116 I have been performing magic for over 20 year, its members like your self that keep Magicians from posting ANY comments. SO don’t you worry I am sure "the little darlings!" will not read our comments. So again in my posting to any topics I will ALWAYS have to add “IN MY OPINION” for our Special user magicbob116 THANKS FOR THE CORECTION.

Maro Anglero:
I think you completely misinterpreted the meaning of my comment. My intent was not to be critical of you, just to point out that doing a switch is the most effective way to present this so that they THINK you've already done it with "their" quarter. Also, my reference to "the little darlings" was made as a light hearted comment because I thought it was funny that the topic got moved to that forum, which resulted in us discussing cigarette effects in the Kid's Magic forum. Why are you so defensive? You interpret ONE comment of mine as being slightly critical of your post and, out of the blue, you brand me as "members like your self that keep Magicians from posting ANY comments." That's a little harsh. In fact it describes your post (as well as the PM you sent me!) a lot more accurately than my post. I'm sorry you were offended by my post, but I honestly think you should lighten up and not be PMing insults to people over comments that were in no way deratory to you.

I do the gimmicked pen through the gimmicked quarter, and when I'm done you can't inspect anything. Al Angello

I will amend my comment... you can get into trouble real quick when making brash statements using words like "always" or "never" (you need look no further than above to see evidence of that).
Revised post... I PREFER to do a switch so that the spectator believes it is their quarter. It doesn't even have to be the spectator's quarter. If you have subtly allowed them to handle an ungimmicked coin in some way (whether it's borrowed, or just a normal quarter used in the course of another routine, etc.) and then ring in the gaff, they have no reason to WANT to inspect anything because, in their mind, they already have.

If you are saying I completely misinterpreted, then I apologize to you,
But to say it was not directed to me? I see no one else post about the quarter and cigarette so it made me feel it was directed to me, Also what I had PM you is what’s on this topic: Again this was my PM to you: Quote:

No problem. It's easy for misunderstandings to arise in this kind of environment. One of the real dangers of e-mail and message boards is that it's really difficult to tell sometimes if people are saying what you THINK they're saying. You don't have the benefit of voice inflection, body language, etc. to help you decide if someone's being sarcastic, etc.
I wouldn't say that my comment was directed AT you, personally, but just at the topic of cigarette through quarter in general. Yes, it was as a result of you bringing it up, but I wasn't trying to be rude or anything. Anyway, I'm glad we got everything straightened out. Now we can all go back to arguing over PB&J and fire!!!

Cig thru quarter presents a whole different problem for me than pen penetration. You see, I have the Johnson half and really enjoy using it. The problem is that I live up here in Canada. American coins are familiar but rare and, as a result, it becomes impossible to "borrow" a coin (especially a half, since they're becoming rare even in the U.S.). So, although I would dearly love to borrow the coin to perform the effect, I can't.
Instead, I start with a version of Eddie Fecher's Flying Eagles, where the spectators are allowed to freely handle the coins. In that effect, I use about 6 U.S. half dollars. At the end of the routine, I pull out a pencil and ask as spectator to place the eraser end of the pencil on any one of the coins he chooses, and I instruct him to hold it there as I remove the rest of the coins. Once that's been done, I tell him there were two reasons I had him hold the pencil on the coin. The first was to make sure he had an absolute free choice of any one of the coins on the table. The second reason was to let the rubber from the eraser soften part of the coin. Then I go into the effect. That's about as good as I can get to emphasize the innocence of the coin without actually asking someone to examine it (which is something I prefer not to do). Kent

There are a couple videos on the Flip stick by flip himself. Also, Kevin James has a section aboutit and variations on one of his lecture videos he did at the magic castle. Both can be good resources for you.
