I had the opportunity to see Bob Sheets routine with the shells recently. Great stuff! It has given me a renewed interest in learning the shells that I never had. After watching his video, he appears to use a "velour" mat to perform on. When he lectured, he uses a magicians mat which is an entirely different surface. My question is this, for a beginner, what is the best surface to learn the shells on? I have noticed a "tell", or a "rearward rise" in the shell when the pea is loaded or stolen with a hard surface. With a mat is seems more subdued. Any comments are appreciated.

It's easier on a close-up mat, but with the right shells & pea it's quite possible to do it on a marble or glass table.

If you handle the shells gently but firmly (contradictory? It sounds like it but it's not), you can resist the upward force of the shell, causing the pea to compress downward instead... plus it helps to have good equipment.
I think the surface you saw Bob Sheets use was the School for Scoundrels street table. I think the surface was green velvet.

I think that with high quality peas, it can be done on any surface. Personally some sort of mat is easier for me. Especially for the load. The steal is easy on most surfaces. Just experiment and see what works best.
