Hey guys, as I've said before, I've been working on my cups and balls routine a lot lately, and I'm considering to "upgrade" my set of cups. I currently have a set of Penguin Cups, and I doubt I'll be needing to upgrading any time soon, but it's something I would like to start thinking about. I definately don't want to spend any more than 300 hundred dollars, but even that price range is a bit pricey. Realistically, somewhere in the 200-250 range would be be even better. I'm good with just about any material other than aluminum, the heavier the better (I love really heavy cups). I'm thinking more along the line of regular sized cups, I'll be using them from everything to living room sized show to walk around, so I don't need big jumbo cups.
Thanks Guys, I appreciate it |

Sherwoods, Johnsons, Monti cups, JES cups, all good choices.
Don't exclude the possibility of a good set of used cups.

I've been seriously considering Johnsons, and I was wondering if these cups can take a pretty good beating? I'm not talking about dropping off a roof, but I love hitting my cups with a wand, I don't know why. I also have been looking around for some good cups on ebay, all that ever seens to show up though is the magic maker cups, and occasionally some Johnson and Phoenix Cups.

Johnson cups are brass and will take a good beating, I think.
I didn't like them only because they did not take a large enough load and they were not copper. They are a darn good cup for the price. They will not take a tennis ball. You should also consider the sherwood smooth cups. If you're going to spend some money, you can't go wrong with those cups. If you decide later to get different cups, you'll never get your money back with pengouin crap. Get the real thing. In the end it's not that much more money but you'll sure appreciate them more. It took me about three ebay auctions before finally winning a set of Animal "Love" cups in "mega-thick" copper. The price is about the same as Johnsons, maybe a bit more depending on the "heat of the moment" bidding flurry. They are slightly wider diameter and take a tennis ball as a load.
I really like the more rugged look of the Animal products. This will be my fourth set. First Babes, then Super Animals, a set of "Golf" cups and now the Loves. They give the impression of hand made quality, not something knocked out at a factory somewhere. Johnsons to me just look too "perfect."

True. Dave is right on.
In fact, in my cups routine I even tell the audience (if I'm in the mood) that my cups (Babes) are hand-made in England. Acutaully, I'm not sure where exactly they are made and I don't really care. But it's better than saying they're made by some computer lathe in New Jersey.

If I recall correctly, and it's very possible that I don't, the Gary Animal cup line is spun by a gentleman named Vic from Sheffield.

The Johnson cups are CNC machined and they have a tendency to hold up very well. They are available in copper from Kenna Thompson. The copper sets are quite expensive, about $395, if I remember correctly.
I didn't mention the Gary Animal cups, because of availability. Gary's account on PayPal and eBay got hijacked, so he pulled his last batch of cups off the auction. However, you can e-mail him at mail@yellowmelon.co.uk. If you do it, you must act very quickly. On 22 March, he leaves for New Zealand, and it will be at least 7 months before he produces cups again.

I was considering the Sherwood Smooth, but correct me if I'm wrong, I heard that they were made of a fairly thin metal, and dent very easily. I saw it in another post.
Thanks guys, Evan |

By the way, does anyone have the dementions of some of Gary's cups?
I appreciate it, Evan |

What he said.
Brett's cups are not thin at all. I just would not bang them with anything, that's all.

As far as I know, Gary Animal just put all his stock of cups into storage on the 15th. They will not be available until September.

I just received The Gary Animal 80mm copper cups....Truly amazing work!!! Good luck with your search! What is the largest final load for a Johnson cup?
RC Gary's description: The new street stubby is a tad bigger than the old animal and it's a shorter cup. These are great and I have only made 5 and I need to keep 1 set as it's the cup I will now use. easier to handle than the gazzo and takes a better size orange than the babe would. ..... |

The new Foxy II.5 cups take a tennis ball or slightly larger for a final load. They are spun from 050 copper and the peformer can nest 3 1" on the saddle and stack the cups.

If you already have Penguins, why would you want to change? Although many don't care for the business practices evidenced in the past, the cups themselves are excellent.

There are really two issues here. One is the past practices of Penguin, which at this moment, do not seem to have actually changed. They have talked a good show, but the knockoffs are still on their web site.
The quality is the issue. If you have a really good set of Penguin/MM cups (I categorize them together), then you are fortunate. Over a dozen sets of these have passed through my hands. Out of them, only four sets were good enough to stay in the Museum. The variables are the tightness of the rim beads, the finish on the cups and the way they are cleaned and packed. The latter doesn't really count, if you don't mind doing some scrubbing. But there is a point when you are purchasing props that you really shouldn't have to spend time with a Scotchbrite green pad, household detergent and a copper polish. I have NEVER had to clean a Sherwood cup, a product from RNT II, James Riser, Johnson or Gary Knights (AKA Gary Animal) before I could use it.

I got my Penguin Cups on Christmas, and it seems like I got a pretty good set, not perfect. The tops where not thoroughly finished, and there were some little nicks here and there, but nothing too noticeable. My cups will take a lacrosse ball, which I found to be a fairly uncommon thing. The insides where horrible, but I hear all of them are. Some steel wool and some elbow grease got these decent though. They are pretty good cups, the only reason I want a new set is because when I see these guys with this big collection of cups, and that's something that I really want to do. I'm not going to be able to afford buying every set in sight (you're a lucky man Bill). However, I do want to start a collection, which I will add to over time, and I feel that now is a good time to start.

I should add the van Dokkum cups to the list of the ones that are always clean. You could eat out of them.
If you don't mind putting some elbow grease into your cups, there is nothing wrong with a good set of Penguin/MM cups. There is no better time to start collecting cups than now. Don't buy them as an investment. You never know whose cups are going to increase in value and whose won't, but a good rule of thumb is this: Well-made cups from name manufacturers are more likely to increase in value than any others. It doesn't matter as much how many sets were made as the quality and the name of the maker. For example, Ross Bertram cups will always be worth more than Magic, Inc. Charlie Miller cups. P&L cups, which are plentiful, will always be worth a premium. Beware the counterfeits. They are common. BTW, I have never seen a set of Penguin copper cups that had a perfect saddle. All of them seem to have little "peck marks" on the top. I don't know why that is.
