I personally leave the joker in. It gives you the ability to display the deck as if it were a normal deck (able to flash both sides of the deck). If the card is choosen that leaves you holding the deck with the joker on top, I explain that not only will the choosen card be upside down, but it will rise to the top of the deck. I then turn over the top card which is the joker and make the comment "I was only Joking". It works for me.

I'll throw in my .02 I leave it in. I love the little display and I feel it's not that big of a deal to just take the joker off to me the display outweighs taking the joker off

I don't use the Joker too. After the spectator has shuffled the ID, I tell him to make a fan and to look if the deck is well shuffled and I ask: "Are the suits hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds well mixed?" After the answer "Yes" I say: "So, from one of the suits choose any value, take that card out and put it back, reversed." Nobody ever choosed the Joker.

One thing that I started doing with the ID is to cut the deck above the chosen card after the revealed card is removed. That way I can accidentally flash the top of deck showing the back. It also makes resetting easy, the card from the spectator goes onto the top of the deck. Is that how the ID is usually handled?

You could always have two jokers back to back - it wouldn't matter then which way you took the deck out of the box!
The way I perform this is similar to Bill Malone's "Standing Ovation" where I involve three or four people to arrive at the card. Questioning red/black; heart/diamond; spot/picture to each of the three or four people never prompts a joker. The last one to identify the card places it back into the deck face down and then into my 'empty' drawer box. A quick shake of the box and, voila - the visible deck! |

As I have not tried doing ID with Jokers, this is my guess.
(1) With Jokers, you can show back of the deck when you take it out. (2) With Jokers, you need to turn over the deck before spreading it. (3) Without Jokers, you can't show back of the deck when you take it out. (4) Without Jokers, you can spread the deck as soon as taking it out. In my patter, I stress "The card you selected is face down in face up cards". So taking out face up deck and spread it without any other handling gives clearer image than spreading the deck after turning it over. So comparing the pros and cons, I prefer doing ID without Jokers. I understand many of you want show back of the deck, but you must always weigh "your desire" and "audience's view" in a balance. This was my guess before writing above, but this is my belief now. Hideo Kato |

I just leave the joker on one side...the side that the spectators first see. If that's the side that they will be viewing, I just slide it off and return it to the box. If they will be looking at the other side I just turn the deck over without removing it. Either way no problem.

Marty...
Great idea on cutting the deck after exposing the chosen card! I think I'm going to start doing that...sort of reinforces the idea to the spectator that it's just your average, ordinary deck of cards front and back. Bravo!

Take out the joker if it's on the side you need, without flashing the other side. I don't want to say any more, so I don't give it away.
