Hi,
This is a question for the veterans at the Café. A couple of years ago, I saw an old recording of Jerry Mentzer or Jerry Andrews - I'm not sure - performing a great, very visual stand-up routine with one ball, about the size of an orange, and a plastic, perhaps metalized foil. The ball would vanish and reappear from the foil, which also had a round spot the size of the ball printed on of its sides to represent the balls when it was gone... Does anyone know what I mean? I know printed instructions exist, for I've seen them before but I'm not sure where I can get these again. Help! Thanks a lot, Christof

Enjoy

Thanks, Jo, that's just what I was looking for. There are actually 3 DVD's out there: "Jerry Andrus - A Lifetime of Magic". What a man!

That was definitely Jerry Andrus. Jerry is one of the few magicians I know who never actually lies during a performance.

Jerry never lies, nor does he do anything that he thinks is wrong. He's one of the most eccentric people I've ever met, and deserves a lot of respect not only for his magic creations but because he's true to himself.
Anyone who's interested in learning a powerful coin production that's also a great transition from card effects should check out Jerry's Miser's Miracle. In my opinion it's brilliant, especially the last coin. Larry |

Jerry is almost as much of an enigma as his magic.

When Jerry does a card trick he will not say, "I'll put your card in the middle of the deck, riffle it, and it comes to the top." He will say, "I put the card in the middle of the deck, riffle it and your card is on top." Very subtle difference, but completely truthful.

Jerry is also the most polite and genuinely nice guy I have ever met. Glad to have been part of the Mysticians in Eugene for a bit to get to know him.
And if you are looking for someone to be honest about your act, he is the one to ask. He will not lie to you in order to make you feel better. RevJohn |

First let me say what a lose it was to the magic world when Jerry died last year.
Second, does anyone know if anyone sells the red mylar sheet with the yellow dot on it that Jerry used in his Mylar Mystery routine? I have seen places that sell the Zone Zero board and ball but why not throw in a mylar sheet as well?

Jerry made his own. I think he used a sheet from some kind of mimeograph stencil to make the first one.

That mylar is a pain to find. I went all over Austin for days looking.
I'll also mention that most shops that say they carry Zone Zero are out of stock. Katrina ate my board (among other things) and I finally had to measure someone elses board and make my own. |

I almost forgot, Gary Kurtz has a routine that is similar in his book. I think it is called "Unexpected acts".

It looks like there is a Zone Zero 2 being sold by several magic dealers. The thing that is confusing me is that the demo videos that is associated with the ad looks to be Mylar Mystery. It would be great if the Mylar was included since it sounds like it is hard to find.

I don't know why it should be hard to find. You can get mylar sheeting at a crafts store and either spray paint it or use plastic adhesive sheeting to put a design on it.
This is not a government controlled material. BTW, Acetate may work better than mylar. Mylar has a tendency to be kind of saggy. Acetate retains its shape. What's it going to cost you? A dollar? Jeez.

Bill,
I don't know why it was hard to find but that does not change the fact that it was. I checked both craft and office stores. I think there are many controlled materials that would have been simpler to find. And Acetate was no more available. Heck, most places I visited didn't even know what I was talking about. Jeez back at ya |

Well if I buy Jerry's DVD that covers how to do Mylar Mystery will they tell me what the best dimensions are for the Mylar/Acetate sheet? I already own Zone Zero so I have a good idea of how it is done although it is always better to get all the details from the master, plus more ethical, so I am planning on getting that video as well. If I do make my own sheet I might as well make 20 and sell them on Ebay for a few bucks (with out method of course).

My Zone Zero 2 arrived today. I had considered it for a long time as I admire the creativity of Jerry Andrus. Impulse buy last week made it happen. Regret I had not made the investment earlier. This is great work from a creative mind. I will enjoy sharing this magic with folks.

Sad to hear of the loss of MR. Andrus. He was quite a character. Don't forget, he did all the illustrations to his books, LOTS of hands with cards.
Go to True Value or some such and tell them you have to put clear plastic over a broken window. They will sell you a roll of mylar/acetate/whatever and your in business. It needs to be thick enough that it won't kink badly when you are shaping it. If you experiment with the too thin stuff (report covers) and you'll see what I mean. You may need to experiment with paints to be sure to get one that sticks and stays flexible. I first skipped over the painted circle idea thinking it was not quite right but I found it makes too much sense not to include. I learned the routine before I was 20 but stopped doing it in a few years. The Mylar (sic) should be about as wide as Zone Zero but not quite as long. I used to try to make it from a report cover but they are not quite big enough. Your also right about the Andrus critique. Long ago, I made a bad job of my close up the one time he saw me and he gave me the most brutal scowell. I'll never forget that. |

It seems to me that, while Andrus' statements were factual and precise, he was lying.
Lying is the Magician's stock in trade, and whether we honestly describe the movements of a decoy card (manipulating observers into incorrect inferences) or blatantly mischaracterise a box full of ducks as being "completely empty," truthfulness is antithetical to our Art. A False Transfer is untrue, even if during its performance one says nothing about the object's location; that a lie is visual rather than audible does not change its ontology. All Art is deception, and in this instance, IMO, Andrus deceived himself. |
