Would any of you share a favorite silk routine that works well on the street and why you like it, etc.?
Thanks again, - Bill

I haven't done it on the street, but I imagine Slydini Silks, where you have spectators tie two silks together with either a square or granny knot only to have the performer separate them with no difficulty and lots of comedy.
"Oh, come on. If you're not going to try [separates silks], neither am I." You can find the routine on Bill Malone On the Loose Volume 1, and can purchase the silks from many dealers. I got mine through Hocus Pocus. |

Vanishing/color changing silk with a TT is in almost every street performer's act.
I do a variation of the Slydini silks and it KILLS. Great trick!!!! I agree with the Bill Malone video. This is a short and sweet version of the trick that plays well. Slydini could make this trick last 10 minutes and it was entertaining as all get out. Unfortunately, most of us mere mortals could not do the entire Slydini routine on the street and hold people with it. I know I can't. I'm just not that good. If you do three or four tie/unties it plays great! Another good point is because of the action and the size of the silks, it draws people over to see what is going on. A trick to stay away from on the street is the serpent silk, where the silk unties itself. It is a great trick and a very nice opener but if it is windy it kills the effect. I agree wih Danny, that the basic appearing/disappearing silk works wonders on the audience. I am constanly amazed at the effect it has upon people for such a simple trick.
The 20th century silks can also play well, and are great if you want to get the crowd involved. Mat |

Thanks for the informative input. Once again Danny, you have succinctly hit the nail on the head...or tapped it up your nose...or something.
- Bill P.S. Let me just take a few lines to express my gratitude to everyone in this forum for sharing their ideas and experience. I don't want to sound maudlin, but your replies have really improved my performances. - SB

Using a silk for silk and coin routine can work well on the streets. Check out Ammar's coins thru silks or Curtis Kam's Chinese Silk and Silver Routine. A real gem for the streets. Possibly think about adding a silk to routines that are too angly for the street. Card productions don't work on the street, but cards from silk does (great opener). Make sure you don't use expensive silks. They will get dirty.

GREAT Idea! As a matter of fact, Cellini does a version of the trick you mention Ammar does (Fred Kaps originated it if memory serves). It is a GREAT trick on the street, but be careful of the wind!

Any contiuous production from a silk routine should work as well. 20th century silks also should work well.
Silk productions are not good, though because of the wind factor. |

I've seen the dye tube routine done with good success. Although it tends to have a sucker type of ending. At least from what I saw of a chinese magic friend who does it. He performs it with a sucker type of patter. "You take this red silk and as you push it into your hand it" and acts surprised when it changes color. It gets a great reaction, but he went on too much once and got sort of mobbed and ended up exposing the tube.
If I did it, I'd finish it differently. I do a silk routine myself with a tt with a kid helping me use the wand and different things to do the magic. When it disappears, I have him take a couple of tissues out of a tissue box and after inspection then have the silk reappear from the tissue. Has been getting great reactions for me. I roll the tissues up into a small ball with the tt inside and then ending with the opening facing upwards, slowly tear the tissue open and slowly pull out the silk. JoJo

Danny, isn't wind an issue with silks on the street? Cellini does a few routines with silks. On the new magic that can be dvd killer stuff.

The Slydini book talks about other effects that can be done with the silks after the magical untying of the silks.
One is where the knot splits into 2 knots, one in each silk. The other is where the knot travels from one silk to the other (I think). Does anyone do this sort of thing? Frank

I've seen Slydini's silks being done on the street and the crowd lost interest ( the couple that were involved stayed ). The street is an interesting place and experience will dictate what works best.

Charlie Edwards did the silks for decades in the street.

I hate to tip this but marmaduke is right. The Charlie Edwards routine is about 1000 times better than the Slydini routine on the street.
The reason? Charlie was a busker. It can be found in Lewis Gansons Routined Manipulation Finale. I will be using this routine. It is that good. I hate to share it, good thing I love you guys Best, Dan- P.S. Thanks Mark for pointing me in the direction of this routine. "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Frank. You probably own the book already. Most people do but don't know they have it.
Danny is very generous to give you the source. He probably shouldn't have. No more help though. You know enough to find it. If you follow the trail you will find a wonderful routine. If you go to the trouble of finding it then you will deserve it. If you don't follow through then you were not meant to have the routine in the first place. Charlie Edwards was a real character. He was offered top work in England when he was active. He was even offered the famous London Palladium if he would get his teeth fixed. He had bad teeth and he refused to get them fixed so stayed working the street. He also sold tricks in petticoat lane. He sold "flick books" In fact this product was put out by Art Emerson under a different name and the blue cover looked suspiciously like Charlie's original book. |

Marmaduke,
Was Mr. Edwards from Shropshire? Hulton’s National Weekly put out an article on a "local eccentric" named Charlie Edwards in 1951. I was thinking of picking up the magazine if it could possibly be the same fellow. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Charlie must've been great as he was one of Ken Brooke's main mentors. Ken always raved about him. Now I gotta look up the routine.

Ganons's routined books were my first serious magic books. As a kid, I learned his split fan production and used to open my show with it, accompanied, if I remember correctly, to Paul McCarney music.
