Has anyone traveled with magic on a plane? My concern is that with all my gimmicked items I might set off the security alarms...

I pack my metal stuff away in my luggage or carry-on. I did get a very long look from a security guy when I had to empty my pockets and laid two TTs on the table.

Put anything you won't be using in the terminal or on the plane in your checked baggage. Hopefully all you'll need is a deck and some coins. Unless you don't mind body cavity searches.
And when security asks questions about your TT don't joke around. Tell them that it's a magic prop. If you make sure you don't have any other metal on your person you usually won't have to dump this out for all to see.

I second this. Don't play games with security. If you are asked what something is, just tell them it's a magic prop. It will save you many long hours of trouble.

Hello:
Depending on how much you travel, consider carefully how you will deal with the loss of all your magic gear via an airplane luggage snafu. If you are situated magically that you can in fact carry your act onto the plane with you...great! But in mine, I used a large KNIFE and other questionable material that would NOT get on and in fact I would not want found for obvious reasons. I suggest that you have backups of your most valuable and most difficult to replace effects. Have someone ready to overnight them to you if needed. If that won't work, have enough material practiced, rehearsed, etc. that you can put together on the literal spur of the moment to get the show done and still look like a top-flight pro. Best, Brad Burt

Uh, well, I made a post regarding this in the escape forum, but I am currently dealing with the airline over a lost suitcase. In said suitcase was 3/4 of my escapes act and half of my regular magic act. I had a few items in my carry-on. I got strange looks from security (yes, I was one selected for the detailed search...even had to remove my shoes) when they pulled out the container that had my buffalo dollar coins in them. I had to empty the container then explain why I had that particular type of coin. Unfortunately, I am not one that had duplicates of a lot of my stuff as I had pieced everything together over several years. I'm now having to be extremely selective in what bookings I accept. I'm losing income because of this, and the airline apologizes for my "minor inconvenience."
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

I work on aircraft for a living and take all my close up stuff with me when I travel. I also take it to work everyday for practice. As long as there are no sharp instruments in your stuff you'll be fine. Just remember, the more you carry the more they're going to have to check. Whatever you do, just let them check your stuff. Do not try to hide anything because they'll look at you strangely enough when you go through security. No Needle Thru Arm, Color Changing Knives or Razor Blades in your carry on luggage.
Enjoy your trip. Before performing on board the aircraft, let the cabin crew know what you're going to be doing. Do not take it for granted that you'll be able to perform.

Thanks for the advice. No, I won't play games with security. I just wanted to make sure my Raven wouldn't be ripped to shreds because it's suspicious.
But you're saying that I can bring my Needle Through The Arm in my luggage? |

You won't be able to take your needle through arm in your carry-on. You shouldn't have a problem in your checked luggage. I'd probably leave my Raven in the checked luggage, too, just to save myself the hassle. Since it's likely something they haven't seen before, I'd be willing to bet they'll take an awfully close look at it -- and the rest of your stuff as well.
Like I said in my earlier post, I got an awfully long look from security for my TTs. I told the security guy that I'm an amateur magician and I use it for my magic. He seemed a little skeptical, but let me go without a problem. |

Thanks.
Yes, like Burt mentioned, I'll travel light with a deck and some coins. My main concern was transport ... I thought that they might not let anything strange onboard the plane even if it's in my luggage. |

In your checked baggage is fine. I believe most carriers still permit you to check firearms in baggage although I haven't done this personally since 9/11.
