Hi there,
I'm not really into escapes (mostly mentalism for me), but I used to do the 100ft rope escape when I was a kid. I was just curious about what the popular thinking is about whether escapes are best presented as quick and easy or tiring and difficult. That is, do people tend to take the approach of "Tie me as well as you like, but its so easy for me I'll be out in 30 secs" or is it more of "This is a demanding physical exercise involving great skill - and I find it very difficult to do, but I'll try." As 15 year old, I used to go for the former, and then evolved into the latter approach in my late teens and haven't done escapes since. What do people think about this? Apologies if this is a really ignorant question - I ask just out of curiosity and have a very poor knowledge of this field. |

Rajat,
The only ignorant question is the one never asked... I can only speak for my own views but, I beleive that escapes should always at least look like they require an almost "supernatural" amount of skill and willpower. I know from my own experiences that sometimes that same perceived skill and willpower is all too real. Escapes do, for the most part, involve extensive training, thought and skill. Tony

Tony,
Well put,if it looks to easy,... it is! You pointed out what makes a good escape, a great escape, and believable! Your last point is right on! Steve |

I always stand by the phrase, make the easy look difficult and the difficult look easy. This works for both escapes and card magic. When someone times me up with 100ft read crapy, like in my mind I know I can get out in seconds, I make the actual escape last a few minutes. To Build Suspense, that's something I try to envote, suspense and fear when ever possible and logical.

Make everything look tough, and make you escapes as tough as possible. Then you don't have to act... I don't know, just a thought. /Ark

I once herd but cant remember from where. "Make the easy, look tough, and the touch to look impossible." I have the same question you do, so take from it what you will.
