Hello Everyone,
When approaching, introducing and before I even begin my opening effect for someone, I'd like to create a mysterious, magical environment. I want to perform in an atmosphere where people want to believe in the magic, not just figure out the trick. Any suggestions for references or certain performers that excel in this type of mysterious mood setting? |

Hi, zeroG,
Are you interested in mysterious mood, or simply establishing an atmosphere that will help your audience suspend its disbelief? Darwin Ortiz' "Strong Magic" is worth a read and may be what you are looking for.

John,
I would settle for the latter but would prefer the initial. I will look into your suggestion. Thanks! |

Also recommended: The Magic Way (by Juan Tamariz). Along with 'Strong Magic,' you'll have a wealth of ideas to put your magic in the miracle class.

Hey,
Today I was thinking after a street performance that people would be more likely to think that your doing tricks and not real magic if they see you approach with a deck of cards in your hand. Why would someone who knows real magic need a deck of cards to show his supernatural powers? Sometimes I open with something like a pulse stop which seems very realistic. Any more ideas for mysterious opening effects? |

I like the Derren Brown type of approach, where you instill a feeling in your audience that you can establish a degree of mental empathy to such an extent that a telepathic effect is possible, even if you then go into an ID routine.

It can also work if you suddenly switch in and out of personalities, that sometimes throws the spectator.

I'm surprised no one has asked this question yet:
What type of magic do you do? Stage, Close-up, Parlour? There are ways to develop a mysterious mood with each, but they will differ based on how "intimate" you are with your audience. Thanks, Richard Green

I agree Callin, I used to have problems creating the right atmosphere in my show when I moved away from stage performances and could no longer control the conditions as well.
But although this is perhaps not the most important way to set mood, there is one thing I will tell you that I used to use. Set up (or just stand) under a street light in the evening. A lot of people do their acts in the day, but especially late fall early winter, like right now, there is something quite magical about an evening performance outside. If you pick a good spot and it's not too late, you'd be surprised how many people will stop to watch you, despite the cold (tip: stay near shops etc as the heat generated will make you more inviting). By standing under the street light as I suggested, you will not only stand out, but it will create quite a mystical mood (Think the Poster for the movie "Exorcist"). And if it started to snow, well my friend you've got it made. Hope these suggestions help. Matt (Midnight Magic) |
