I lost one of the small crocheted balls in the rambles of my magic room! I was thinking of substituting foil balls until it either turns up or I can get to Boston/New York and get another set.
Do you think that would work with aluminum cups or would they be difficult to see? I was considering buying some spray paint in "hammered copper" and painting the cups, but I'm not certain. (And no, just buying new cups is not in the cards!) Anybody have any input on this?

What size was it? If I have one, it's yours. In fact, I know I have a set of 1". If you want the set, let me know and I'll send them to you.

Blame it on your kids. Make them look for it. No supper until the little ball is found, children! And never touch Daddy's toys again!

This is exactly why I always carry a spare set of crocheted balls. After one ball tumbled away during an outdoor demonstration, I decided to be prepared for future shows.
You can purchase new sets of crocheted balls pretty inexpensively (the shipping may be more than the cost of the balls). Take a look HERE. Just be sure when you order, that you specify the Morrissey brand crocheted balls from Canada, which are top quality and made with a good thick yarn. The cheaper Indian sets use a much thinner yarn and a harder center, which makes the balls "talk" during certain moves. You can get the balls in 1" or 3/4", depending upon the size of your cups and your hands. SETH

I'd just use small rubber balls from the dollar store, until I could get a replacement set of crocheted balls. Craft stores might even have something - some performers use little pom-poms and other things like that.

You could get some cord and some marbles and make some monkey's fist balls. It's not that difficult to make some that are serviceable. You can find instructions on-line. They might not come out as nice as some of the commercially available ones, but they'll be a fine temporary solution.

Ken Brooke's routine used three cups and three balls.
It's in Routined Manipulation and one of the Ken Brooke books.

One thing people have done in the past is to purchase another set.
or you can do what I did and learn how to "felt" your own set.

Thanks for the offer. I'm working on either tin foil or super balls until I can do otherwise.

Superballs and yarn! The tinfoil rang like a bell in the aluminum cups! Maybe it wouldn't have been as obvious actually out on the street, but I'm taking no chances!

The superballs and yarn worked rather well. It'll serve until I can get up to Boston to Hank Lees (or until I put enough on my Visa to place an order.)
I have to pick up some red fabric and glue for Afghan Bands. I'm working out a "Copperfieldish" bit about comparing the different sort of relationships. I'm beginning to fear for my memory as I'd bought some fabric and glue and put it some place in my magic room and can't find it! (This is becomming menotious (sp) )
