I work in the creative department of an advertising agency, and I recently noticed that half of us in the department are lefties. Which leads to me wonder, is the magic community predominantly right or left handed?

Oh, and to start it off, I'm a lefty. So that's 1 for lefties. 0 for righties. Smile

I'm right handed, but what if we have people who are ambidextrous? I guess that would make one for right AND one for left. Smile

I am ambidextrous. Maybe a tad more dominant in the right hand but pretty much even in both.

A southpaw is a lefty. I, on the other hand, am a righty.

But fwee if you gave your right hand to be ambidexterous then you'd be a lefty. Smile

Since more lefties, than righties, will answer this survey, it's going to skew your results, Liquid B.
However, if you notice, most of the smilies are lefties (the ones that give any indication at all; some of them are pretty tight-lipped!)
BTW, I'm a rightie (just to be ornery!)

IceRaven02: Southpaw is boxing slang for some-one who is lefhanded and boxes as such.

With card magic, I'm mainly a lefty, though I've learned to be ambidextrous with sponge balls, coins, (what little coin magic I know, anyway) and cups and balls magic.

In life outside of magic, I'm mainly left-handed, except with most sports.

I guess you should put me down as a lefty; left is the hand I naturally use for most things.

Why are lefties called southpaws? In the late 1890's, most baseball parks were laid out with teh pitcher faceing west(so the sun would not be in their eyes) That meant that left handed pitchersthrew with the arm that faced south. Chicago sortswriter Charles Seymour coined the phrase southpaw.

Other miscellany

lefties make up 5 to 10% of the population but 15 to 30% of all patients in mental institutions.
Lefties are more likely to be on the extreme ends of the intelligence scale. There is a higher proportion of lefties that are mentally retarded people and persons with IQ's over 140

I forget the source for this information, but have never forgotten it.
