Just want to know how much have you guys spent in magic. I bought tricks/DVDs which I guess I've used about $600-$700. Well, that's so much money for me but use maybe 50% of them only.
I saw the trick/DVD in some demo video at some magic website and if I like it, I order it. I also bought some things which some people said it's excellent, but for me, it's not.... I must say I bought SO MUCH that I don't need and that does not suit me. So, how about you? How much have you spent in magic and how many of them do you use? |

I also spent way more than I should when I first started. I use the analogy of the magic courting and honeymoon periods where one just doesn't care how much or how senseless money is spent as every dollar in expenditure gives us the magic love buzz. After the honeymoon is over, the spending started to decrease as you know exactly what to buy to give you the high. And you just get smarter as the years go by.. Cheers!

I've been overspending a bit, but it's been sooo much fun that I'm not judging myself too harshly. (Though I've promised myself not to buy some priceless set of cups and balls.)
As someone suggested in another post, the anticipation of a new trick arriving is intoxicating. I'm waiting right now for the next miracle in the mailbox. Hey -- if some of your stuff isn't right for you -- maybe you could sell it to me! Best, Daniel |

I could probably finance a small Kia with what I've spent on magic.

Lots of money over the years, but the more important question is, what did you get out of what you spent?

It is when you go pro you don’t think about how much you spent;
the magic I have purchased had paid for it self when I use it on many paid gigs. Maro

I spent $200 at Barry's Magic Shop in Wheaton, MD, last August, I bought some very silly tricks, Geme Amderson's newspaper magic DVD, and Mark WIlson's Complete Course in Magic.
The latter two were by far the most valuable. Since then I've bought Jeff McBride's Card Manipulation 1 for $30, I'm waiting for the Royal Road in the mail ($30), and I recently started a 3-month magic class for $90. All in all, $350, and I think I have enough material to keep me going for a very long time.
I'm...I'm just not feeling STRONG right now...

Yes, the money is flowing out! I've returned after a 20 year hiatus. So, I'm in the honeymoon period. I've only bought 2 gimmicky tricks, (Black & White Suprise; and Matchbox Penetration). The rest have been books and DVDs. Mostly books. It is starting to slack a little because I have more material than I can use right now.
But then Steve Brooks has to offer the Magic Deopot 50% sale! That is going to help my addiction! |

I have spent about $500 in the four years I've been in magic, and I've only bought great stuff, stuff that I use. If not for The Magic Café I wouldn't have had any idea on what to buy or even what kind of magic I am interested in(cards).

@tigerman21345- Allow me to enlighten you. First you have two questions here. One is the subject of how much you spend, the other, what it is spent on. It is very true that in the best of situations you will only use 1/5 of what you purchase. This is an unmutable fact of magic, and it has nothing to do with the quality of what you purchase. Every effect ever created, with a tiny tiny few exceptions, is a gem. The trick is, not every effect will apply to your style, and there realy is no way to know in advance which ones will. Take heart true believer, there is a solution to this conundrum. Look for quality "AND" quantity. Keep an eye on the forums for the mention of the gold standards. The resources that are "must haves" and provide a wealth of information. You know the ones I mean "Mark Wilson's Course in Magic", "Bobo's Modern Coin Magic", The Tarbell series. I have been performinf profesionaly for over a decade and I have spent a surprisingly small amout of money on the art.
Another important tip. Stay away from the trick of the day. If it is one effect, and you just "Have to have it". Then you realy don't want it. I always recomend buying one effect, or a resource just to get one effect. I have been consistantly disapointed buying magic this way. Fortunatly, it didn't take me long to learn my lesson. |

For the most part, I purchase most of my stuff off the Café to save money. Every once in awhile I'll purchase something new.
What's nice about the Café is if you buy an effect off the Café and it doesn't fit your style as mentioned above, you can always re-sell it. |

I have spent so much that I also lost count.....i would say roughly close to 2 thousand....and as most of us, I end up using very few of the tricks....my style is more elegant....(or at least I try to be), so I have a whole bunch of stuff I really don't use....(like the icarus effect, baggy pants are not my style....however, "i had to have it")....now I think I'm controling my impulse a little better.....(at least I started using the regular shipping instead of "rush delivery"..)....even as we speak.....i can't wait to go home and wait on my next package....(a silly collapsible top hat)......anyways....at least I know I'm not the only one with this syndrome....oh...by the way......on my next check I'm plannig to get the "stool from briefcase" trick....how strong is the stool?....

Put me down for another $120 during my first visit to Tannen’s in NYC. Oh yeah, and I just won my first eBay auction. (Add $29.)

Well, if you love something, it is hard not to spend money on it. I am not a professional magician (at least, not yet), but Ilike magic. Only in last 12 months I have spent more than $1000! My wife wants to kill me, my kids are saying "not again" and my friends hate me. Just kidding. Not being a professional does not mean that I cannot entertain people, so that is why I do not care I have spent that much. And, once again, if you love something, it is hard not to spend money on it.
