Have you seen this new product at penguin?
I have no experience in balloon sculpting, but I want to start. This sounds like it is really good. Four hours on one dvd! Not only does it seem great because it goes over everything from basics, to advanced balloon sculpting, but it goes over how to get hired. He calls a random place from the yellow pages and gets hired on the spot. I think this information will be pricesless! Now if you know anything about this, am I way off with my assumptions? Is there a much better source out there to learn from? Thanks in advance!

I started with a $12 tape made by a clown. Found at most places they sell balloon supplies, I think it was Tricky The Clown.

Get Tricky's first video (Balloon Magic Made Easy) and a 100 pc. bag of qualatex 260s. It'll cost you less than $20 and you'll learn all you need to know to start twisting. The more you twist the better you get.
Getting jobs is easy for a balloon twister, especially if you are willing to work lines. Twisting for long lines is boring but a great way for a beginner to hone his or her skills. To paraphrase T. Myers "It's ditch digging work... but you'll get payed like a plumber!" |

Hey Lancer, I do not know the product you are speaking of. If it is the one I think then somebody told me that it costs $50. If you are just beginning then I would say that this is a bit steep and that your money is more wisely invested in some of the other products that are cheaper. With the money you save buy balloons and a pump and practice. TMyers, LARock's magic, balloonhq, are some good places to start.

Surf the web and there are quite a few websites that teach you the basic twists and some basic figures. I would try that first, to see if you like it. Will also give you some idea on which figures you prefer. If you do like it you can buy a book or dvd or whatever after that.
I do not know the dvd you are talking about so I cannot comment on that one. |

The Penguin product isn't out yet so no one outside of their organization knows how good it is or isn't. One thing I did notice in the ad was the material includes information on the marketing and business side of being a balloon artist. Considering the length of the DVD as well as they send along balloons and a pump (I would assume it is the one that pumps air when you draw out and push in the rod) the price seems reasonable.

I'd say that starting with Royal magic's 'balloon magic made easy' DVD would be the way to go. It's fairly cheap and Tricky the clown is a great teacher for the beginning twister. You can get the DVD, a bag of Qualatex 260's and a decent pump for less than $30 which is still $20 less than the Joe Montella DVD.
Hope this helps. |

You'll note I recommended the Tricky The Clown video (or dvd). I brought up the Penguin product only because the belief that is is 'too expensive' is not correct based on content and it coming with a pump and balloons then the marketing info is there too. Again, I've not seen it and don't know who Joe Montella is so I am not commenting as to how good or bad it is or isn't.

I am very impressed with this video. I learned a ton of stuff with no stress or tears. I have increased my repetoir 3 fold, and the sculptures I learned make me seem 100 times better and more professional.
I used to make Balloons after my kids shows...(my best being the snake now I may pursue it as a job in itself. I have my first gig lined up already at a 5th grade class night. Thank you very, very, very, very, very, much Mr. Montella. |

T Myers has his Ballooning 101 tape at his web site. It's pretty good as well.

I have very serious issues with the Balloon School DVD. I think that there are much better and much more complete DVDs available. If you really want a complete education in Balloon Twisting, go to http://www.davidgrist.com David Grist's DVD's are fantastic, and contain just about everything you will ever need to know about balloon twisting.
You can also find a lot of great books, videos, and DVDs at http://tmyers.com

Hey...Don Caldwell! Great to "see" you on the Café floor!
BTW...Don's DVDs are a great contribution to the art of ballooning. IMHO, it's some of the most creative and useful stuff available. (I personally don't know Don or have any financial benefits by the plug of his DVDs. Just a guy who really enjoys his work .) It was an unfortunate frowning providence to have lost David Grist recently. It would be great to have his DVD made more readily available to us here in the US. (Hey Tmyers are you listening ) Bosco |

Yeah, I got this and it is good for extreme beginners with lots of advice and info.
Though it could have a bit more detail in some of his figures to make the designs a lot better than they were presented in the video. Other than that, it's not much for the average good twister. The penguin in the background looks like the old movie monster from "at the earth's core" located here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074157/ |

I got the DVD and I'm glad I did. I'm new to ballooning and also have the T. Meyers Ballooning 101 tape. It's good too. The Balloon School helped me get passed problem areas that Ballooning 101 didn't cover. If you're experienced in ballooning it may not help much, but if you're new to the sport, I think it's worth the money.

Well, I was just about to order from Penguin, but decided to take one more look at the 'contents'. I already teach balloon workshops myself, so the only part that REALLY interested me was the Advanced section. But, I think spending 50.00 U.S., being I am Canadian, is just too much for just this one section. I would be looking at, at least 70.00 plus shipping. A little pricey for what I'm getting I think.
I believe I will take Don Caldwell's advice and order some of David Grist materials, and of course Don himself is a MASTER of Balloon Twisting DVD's. For those of you who purchase this Balloon School DVD, I hope you great LOTS OF MILEAGE from it. Happy Twisting... smitty |
