I very much like Osterlinds material, although in actuallity, I've only used one of his many wonderful effects with any consistancy.
I was excited to receive and read his latest work in many years. It is a 8.5X11 inch folded and stapled pamphlet with a heavy paper grey cover. The treatise consists of 3 routines and a "bonus" handling of the last one. The Very Modern Mind Reader Effect: The performer passes out eight to ten blank business cards and pencils to audience members. they are instructed to print their names at the top of the cards and a number of personal pieces of information below, i.e., loved ones, numbers, vacation spots, hobbies, etc. (Q&A could also be done) After they scribe their thoughts, the participants turn their cards writing side down and then seal them inside some coin envelopes that the mentalist distributes. Taking the sealed envelopes back to the stage, the mentalist randomly chooses one, holds it up, and divines the contents. He then cuts open the envelope, removes the card to verify the information then returnes the card and the envelope to the appropriate writer. (You may want to read that part of the description again) That's the first effect taught. Many will recoginze a very similar effect from Annemann's [I]"Bargain Mental Effects"[I] (Oh...Him, AGAIN!) Richard has changed (improved?) it enough for it to be entered as a seperate offering. I think this version has some subtle differences worthy of study. The Osterlind ESP Card System Richard offers this with the original intent as the tests performed by Dr. Rhine many years ago at Duke University. The deck is mixed and a screen is placed between the two participants. The participant on one side of the screen looks at the random selection of symbols...the mentalist on the other side of the screen [I]receives[I] the correct impressions. This is basically "stacking" an ESP deck as you would any other deck of cards. The usefullness of this could, in the right hands, be stunning. It's not the usual 1,2,3,4,5 stack, of which we are all familiar. Actually, when I saw the layout of the stack, I thought it obvious. That made me painfully aware that I have looking at this stuff waaaay to long. In actuality, this is a VERY workable stack, capable of much more than what was offered here. I'm sure this will spawn more great thinking. Steno ESP I admit that I'm not a fan of Mental Epic type effects, but here it is. The mentalist takes out a standard stenographer's note pad and a well mixed deck of cards. A participant on stage selects a face down card while the deck is in his own hands and places the unseen card into his pocket. The mentalist seeks out another random participant and writes something on the first sheet of the pad. This sheet is flipped over so that it is out of play on the back side of the pad. The person is then asked their birthday. This is recorded on the next sheet which is torn out and handed to them. Another audience member is focused upon. The mentalist gets an impression and jots something down on the next sheet of paper. This too is flipped over and put "out of play". This person is now asked their middle name. After spoken, it is written down by the mentalist on the next sheet, torn out and handed to them. Finally, the mentalist points out that the card in the pocket of his helper is completely hidden and unknown to everyone. The mentalist writes something on the next sheet, flips it over then has the card removed. This is recorded on the next sheet, ripped out and handed to the participant on stage. The pad is closed. The mentalist points out that each prediction he wrote was in the audience's view throughout the procedure. He has the first person hold up his paper with the birthday on it. Flipping over the cover of the pad, the correct birthday is displayed! Next, the second person holds up the paper with his middle name. The birthday paper is flipped over and the correct name is displayed! Finally, the person on stage is asked to hold up both the paper and the actual card. Flipping over the sheet, the correct card is displayed! Everything can be examined as there is nothin to find. Unlike other Mental Epic routines, the thing I like about this is that there is NO force. The last choice is not the first thing written. There is also no double writing and nothing to hide at the end. This is by far one of the best versions of this effect. It may be the best one. Should Liz and I decide to do a Mental Epic type effect (if I do, track me down and shoot me!!), this would be a strong contender. Tony Binerelli also had a pretty imprssive version using just a large paper pad and a marking pen. No Mental Epic "props". Like the other Osterlind material, this too is worthy of strong consideration. It will stay in my library and be perused again. Recommended. There you have it. For what it's worth, Ted (Leondo) |

I have been a fan of 'Osterlinds' material for years. He has great high impact effects.
I did not know that he had another pamphlet out. The last thing that I bough was 'Sea Fire' An effect that I feel is the best book test ever! Ray Noble |

Leondo,
Can you tell us more about the Tony Binerelli effect that you mentioned above with the pad - what is the effect and where can it be found. Thanks!! |

Thanks for the review. Incidentally I think the Osterlind Breakthrough Card System is really ingenious (and entirely practical).
There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary numbers, and those who don't.

MagicalDesignPro,
Tony Binerelli's method can be found in his book, "My Way To Mentalism". Is is, as I remember, a stage version of the Mental Epic effect. Has a very clever method. Ted (Leondo) |
