Hello everyone. I'm starting to move into coins, and I purchased an expanded shell in order to do a Paul Curry effect, but now I'm wondering what else should I look at? I have Bobo and I know about the shell chapter, but in your opinion what would be a good routine to begin studying?

If you want to use the shell even more, have a look at Barry Taylor's video "Shell Shocked." It's all about using an expanded shell.

Thanks Leigh, I'm always looking for more references. But, is there a particular routine or two that you, or anyone else, would use as a great example of magic using the shell? That you could use for justification for spending $25 for the gimmick?

Huh, here in Canada a Johnson one cost me $50!
Getting back to your question, I've heard the David Roth tape on Copper/Silver Coins and Expanded Shell is awsome. It's volume 9, I think. |

Troy Hooser does nice routines using the shell (ExTROYdinary; a brass challenge--yet using an added gaff, in addition to the shell), the David Roth series, and a lot more....

Thanks Jim, I appreciate it. I keep hearing Dean's name in reference to great coin magic, and I honestly didn't know he had that expertise.

Two ultimate effects with a shell are:
1) David Roth's Shell Coins Across (in addition, Cody Fisher has a nice commercial handling on his video). 2) Michael Ammar's Shadow Coins -- the most magical visual coin routine imaginable. And for mainline amazement (but you'll need more than a shell) there's Dean Dill's Explosion, in which four coins assemble, jump back, and multiply on the tabletop to 16 coins. Cheers, Jerry |

If you want shell work, you must contact David Neighbors, aka the "Coinjurer."
He is awesome with coins. If you thought Shoot was good, Dave will blow your mind away. In my opinion Dave Neighbors is one of the most creative coin workers alive.

I agree that David Neighbors, aka the "Coinjurer," has some great stuff. I have many of his booklets. I got them when I used to live in Colorado Springs.
The two effects that come to mind using a shell are David's handling of Larry Jennings' "Open Travelers" with coins and his standing coins through table. Both effects looks like the real thing. Ray Noble |

Thanks everyone. By the way, is Shadow Coins in Encore 3? I don't see it in the green book.

IMHO almost anything you do with a shell can be really really powerful.

Care to elaborate? I know plenty of things you can do with it that would not be powerful at all.

The best success I have had with a shell is a varaition of coins thru the table using 4 half dollars and and English Penny.

There are so many shelled coin routines out there it would be hard to name just one....
I don't even know where to begin. |

I think it is Jay Sankey's Cartesian Coins. This is a great production of four coins using a shell that is very cleverly flipped over so even the ones who think they know what is going on get fooled.
Check out my new effect "As Good As It Gets" a gimmickles pencil or pen through bill effect. It closely mimmicks the slow motion phase of "Misled." About "As Good AS It Gets" for no gimmicks and everything being borrowed.

Really Ben? I thought the initial production of the coin was a bit too blatant for my taste! Have you ever had someone suggest the concept of the shell? I know he covers it with the moves that follow, but it always scared me off.
