Being that I have taken a number of styles over 15 years (predominately Tang Soo Do), I've found it helps my magic in a number of ways. In terms of misdirection, it does make you more comfortable in looking into your spectators' eyes. Also, I find it helps make you more aware of your environment around you, which is vital to us magical-type performer people. ;-)

Just a note about my post. All of the incidents happened in the Soho district after 01:00am.
Two of the incidents involved being approached by armed muggers and the other I was defending a woman getting a beating from a drunken boyfriend (pimp). In all cases the methods I used went hand in hand with the techniques I use in performance.
