If given a choice, some folks would seem to prefer copy #2 of a numbered edition over, say, copy 56 (or some other significantly higher number), even if there are no other differences between such copies.

Why is that?

My guess would be either the lower number gives the appearance of a greater value or a hierarchy position as "I got mine before you got yours"...

Conversely 999 of 1000 gives the impression "he just barely got his in time".

Perhaps someone else has some other reasons.

Personally, as a collector, if I have any number within the numbered edition I'm happy - and there also is the feeling that only 499 others have this book if it's a 500 numbered edition, which imparts futher satisfaction and disirability.
