Well, maybe not..but I have noticed a growing number of effects that use the premise of a photograph to which something other-worldly happens.
I first began to take notice of this about the time "Heirloom" was released. It was also about that same time, that I realized the power of this type of thing in the mind of the un-initiated, as far as potential to create astonishment. Latest to be released, (and will be out in a couple days), is Sankey's "Nailed". An image of a card in a photograph exchanges with a real card, the real card apparently going into the photo, and the photo apparently materializing into this dimension as a real solid three dimensional card. I remember seeing Copperfield's illusion, years back, where he would cause objects to materialize out the video screen, and three dimensional objects to go INTO the screen. It was very effective, and I think the photograph concept is rather an extension of this kind of thinking, on a MUCH smaller scale, of course, that we can carry around in our pocket. I have to say, I am enamored with the concept, and have thought of a lot of possible plots and effects that could be created with the idea, some of them quite spooky, weird, and downright un-settling. (and that's what I'm after!) I tend to think that in the mind's of laymen, this has to be just a really strong thing. They can deal with coins that vanish, (he hid it in his other hand!) or cards that move to the top of the deck (he used real fast sleight of hand!), but when a genuine, developed photograph changes into something else, well, we're talking another ballgame here. And when that change involves material objects that materialize and de-materialize in and out of the photos, I think the silence at the end of the performance is rather more stunned silence than anything else. This can be even quite unsettling, at times, I believe. After all, after this, where does the spectator's mind run? Not a whole lot of places that it can run to. (At least until the astonishment eventually wears off and the Twilight Zone Theme stops playing in their head.) I believe the field for creating new effects in this genre is wide open, and with minimal effort, I can visualize numerous possibilities for new effects. What do you think?

As long as its spooky photo effects, not like theeffect where a playing card appears on a photo just taken(polaroid camera)which is a bit rubbish.Which is why Keith Barrie performs it!
I have an idea for the end of a seance show, where an assistant vanishes to appear in a victorian family photo! Scares me anyway! |

I had an idea after watching the movie "The Others" I believe it's called with Nicole Kidman.
In the movie, they show "Books of the Dead" wherein the deceased were photographed as though they were still alive, posing, etc. It was very odd when they revealed that all the people in the album were deceased. I began to construct a routine using an antique book of this nature and having certain photo's change during the routine. Example, one's eyes after having been seen shut are now open and just as fast, closed once again. I don't have anything great to say about "Nailed", but if that's your thing, go for it. A bit see through if you ask me. I've had children catch on to the "Magic Stop Light", I can't see any well adjusted adult falling for a grown up version.

To add another one to the list:
http://www.theghoulishgallery.com The owners, Tim and April Turner, are also pretty "magician friendly" too. Tim's a great guy, has an interesting eye for what looks good in a changing portrait, and is one of my daughter's favorite playmates when we go to conventions and gatherings as well! Chris |

I like the Haunted Memories 5 by 7s Jim. What do you do to change the image? I assume you move it so it is at an angle but just a guess.
Thanks

The Haunted Memories portraits are very well done, and yes the change occurs automatically via the angle you view them from. I have Uncle Bernie hung in my billiards room that gets great delayed reactions, as people do not notice the change right away.
I hadn't seen the Ghoulish Gallery collection before Chris Handa's post, and they have a couple of pictures that do not just change, instead a ghost appears in the picture (Dearly Departed, Lonesome Ghost). Very nice effect. |

All of the Harry Potter movies have photographs or paintings that move and interact with the viewer. In some scenes there are these pictures matted into the background (such as on a wall that a character is just walking past).
