I think that you performed it very well, but as I've stated before, I'm not a fan of this particular routine. Dan LeFay is likely right, but it makes no sense to me to avoid using an extra given the resultant negative impact on clarity of effect, economy of motion, etc.

Such fuss for fear of a ] or some double sticky tape or an extra or two or some coins conjoined or... even using a thread.
Why fear methodology?

It's a well executed piece no doubt. I just showed it to my friend and she commented it 'just looks like the coins are being slid around under his hands'.
Funny thing to say really, She's probably seen too much magic though. The whole plot becomes more magical with something [xtra and presentaion. Although Dean Dills 'No Extra's is a really nice version, I kinda prefer it. Best, ak |

One coin is ok but when you uses 2 there are all these lapping problems were you have to let a coin fall between your legs than you let the other one fall and that and it just looks kind of fishy. The Malini/Mohamed Bey/Roth routine displays four items in a square formation and does not require lapping two items. Likewise even the Roth "for magicians only" version is done with a strategy to manage the traffic. He (Roth) also offers a great utility to manage traffic... all in David Roth's Expert Coin Magic. Or you can ask him in person at the NY Coin Seminar events.

I couldn't get the video to load. I tried on 2 different computers. I tried to skip the ads but nothing happened. Consider putting it on a site like Youtube where there aren't annoying ads.

The routine was designed SPECIFICALLY for situational magic... unlike some magicians...i don't like to carry 4 high polished walking liberty coins around with me. Im sure every magician has had some laymen come up to them with quaters and say "Can you do something with these ?" ... and ths was my solution to that problem.
Are there advantages using an extra? ----------- YES!!! Are there disadvantages to using an extra? ------- YES AGAIN!!! I simply find it hillarious that there are those who get on these threads and try and boast about how they are right for there closed way of thinking... different methods and choices provides for a greater range of moments to perform... my opinion. Thanks for responding Daniel. Agree with you on this one.
I learned the routine for my own good. (And added something of it to my own routine, which has become nicer!)

If you're doing magic on demand, and utterly unprepared ( not even a closeup pad? ) then you are working off balance and might also be on the wrong end of the wand so to speak. Do a trick.. good boy, have a treat.
I like things which appear impromptu and am more concerned about clarity of effect from the audience perspective. It's all about what they get to see. At some point I'd like to see a performance clip of Shade done beautifully. I like to watch good magic. The closest I've seen from that school was Armando's routine using cards and coins.

Could you post a video clip of yourself performing "good" magic for us all to watch?
Whatever effect you would like... I like to see good magic too. Shawn.

It sounds like you're calling Jonathan out.
Within JT's writing is the "real goods", nothing in this particular post puts anybody down and there's alwalys something worthwhile to take from his thoughts. Well......except his theory that SW Erdnase was a lady from the temperance league. |

Situational magic can be some of the STRONGEST magic in the spectators eyes. Im not the type of person who sets up thngs in my pocket so that I can do a 30 min. show if someone "ask's"... If there is a friend of a friend that is hanging out with us... and they ask me to show them something....i will GLADLY show them an effect... but there are times when you are put in a situation where a spectators ASKS you to do something "WITH THIS" ... know I know that Larry isn't boasting...so don't worry larry... but I ... "ME" " Myself" am not the kind of person who will carry a shell... or an extra quarter. IF a spectator hands me four quarters and says "do something with this" ... I think from THAT MOMENT you should NEVER go to the pocket...your hands should stay in full view FROM THAT MOMENT ON.... there is no "clean" way to get to your "extra".... and in no way am I a "Dog" performing for treats.... I believe that if some asks you to....lets say... produce a sandwich.... and you immediatly give them gratification by producing a sandwich...you have now made a MIRICLE happen... where as if you go up to someone in the middle of doing magic and say...NOW HERES A SANDWICH... it kills the moment... soooo.... after that long winded speach... in NO WAY do I feel like I am on the "wrong end of the wand" ... I feel like I am on the right end... making the moment better in their eyes. Quote:

I like watching good magic aswell... but "Video killed the radio star" some effects just simply WILL NOT come across in video clips... and its not because it lacks technique, or improper constuction... its becuase it lacks the misdirection which allows the effect to flow properly... its like looking at a cloud... instead of stepping back and viewing the full sky. I COMPLETELY understand that you have your own oppinion... but it doesn't mean that what others believe is nessessarily wrong...just another way of viewing the subject. Daniel Garcia
