I've been performing on the street and in bars, libraries and stores for about three months now. The thing is, I have trouble with my coat or shirt, etc. giving away what I'm doing by making unwanted noise. Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of clothes are best to wear for street magic?
Also, if anyone knows what shoes are best for personal levitation, I would love to hear some suggestions!

From my limited experience with that type of levitation, I would recommend black shoes with black soles. The black soles are the most important component, IMHO.

On top of having the black shoes with black soles, you will also want to find a pair of shoes that fit perfectly so that the front of the shoes cannot be seen while doing the "levitation."

I don't know if I am on my own here, but I like to wear a little bit of "style" when I do my magic. I found a great old Corduroy sports coat.
I have the Raven hidden in one of the sleeves and tons of other things hidden in various pockets. Don't get too carried away on carrying props around though. I have made that mistake before. You get confused and can't find what you want!! Not cool.

Plus, if you lose your jacket, it is one BIG loss.

I don't even wear the jacket anymore and instead defer to the apron and vest approach for all of my pocket needs.
If you are wearing the jacket when performing on the street, here's a decent tip, IMHO. When I first got started I went down to the VOA, Salvation Army, Garment District (for you fellow Bostonians) and picked up a whole bunch of jackets for around 5-15 bucks each. The best thing about them is: 1) They are previously owned and thus need no breaking in. The fabric is easier to work with, it is not as stiff as a new suit jacket will be. They don't talk as much either. 2) At that price, you can fiddle with adding holes and special hookups with the jacket and not worry about losing a huge investment if you accidently tear off the sleeve. (Hmm maybe I should have re-thought that 20 lbs pull.) Always hoping this helps someone, Mat |

Hawaiian shirt, Kahki shorts with 6 pockets, and sandles. But dont forget the jungle hat and nice leather fanny pack, or camera case.
Wear a standard t-shirt underneath , and very dark glasses. Now, stop watching dvds and use your own patter. Or .....erh.....nevermind. Make sure that the shirt is a very, very bright one with huge flowers, so you can be seen from a considerable distance, and not one of those dark blue, I wanna look tough ones. Ladies like flowers, and they carry purses, and purses are always full of tons of change and loose bills. Guys like me carry ATM cards and gaff coins. Not the kind of spectators you are looking for.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

It depends on what levitations you do. If you do the zero gravity levitation, you should wear Chuck Taylor Converse AllStar.

i usually wear a normal shirt, made of cotton. That is used for a certain trick i do. Also, my pocket needs are supplied by my pants. Because its pretty hard to lose your pants i dont really have to worry about losing things.

If you live in a place where it's cold out most of the year (like me), you can wear a coat with lot's of pockets (or layers) which is excellent for holding all sorts of magic tricks, without people being suspicous as to why your wearing all of this garb.

when on the street, how many of you where a jacket? don't you get hot?
I like the Hawaiian shirt idea! Sory I can't help with the shoe question but half the time I'm barefoot, and I don't float.
