Im sure you all know the excellent work of Doug Higley, I know a lot of you own a version of his fantastic Dark Museum.
Those of you that have, or have read about it will know that it is a mentalism routine using strange mumified objects like monkeys paw, shrunken head, ears... The routine is great and I think the whole thing works so well with these sort of props, but I thought it would be intersting to see if any of you have come up, or know of, different effects that these props can be used for. |

Hi, I do stage/parlour seance show, for my closing effect, I make one of audience will make contact with the spirit. I let him sit on my Electric Chair, facing back, and I ask other audience to choose and pick any one of 5 bizarre items (MONKEY PAW, JIVARO HEAD, REAL SKULL,SHAMAN EARS AND TOE,AND OLD CANDLE HOLDER), free choice, do not let me and guy on electric chair see it.
NOW THE MAGICK BEGIN ;o) I will lift of one by one the things and exactly when I lift the choosen object, the spirit tell the guy on chair to stand up, the guy will stand up quickly at that time (ofcourse) heh..heh..ehh... By using the dark museum taht will add and creat more horror on my show!!!! |

The ear can be used for the routine Vincent's Ear, on the Magus Video and in Arcana of Bizarre Magick. The toe could be used in place of the skeletal finger in Digital, a Living and Dead test included in Arcana of Bizarre Magick. The finger (in some versions of the Dark Museum) could be shimmed by shoving a thick pin inside of it, and used in the routine Gris Gris Gumbo (in Turn of a Friendly Card), using the Wizard PK ring rather than the gimmick described in TOAFC.

I bought a shrunken head and use it with a trick called Voodoo. It is the old ashes in the spectators palm trick.

...The Old mystic had waited years for my training to finish so that he could show me the source of his powers...one night, when the moon was low, he called me inside his hut, lit a candle and ushered me to sit... there next to the serpent's abode...
*HISSSSSS* 'It is time you recieve your final blessing from me,' said the old, tired mystic pulling forth a red bag bulging to be free...what I was about to witness, no amount of training could have e'er prepared me for... ...he lit his oversized pipe, coughed his usual cough, and opened the bag... "You see, now that you have traveled the Voudou path for 7 years, I will now show you the source of the powers of the Loa (spirits)..." The old Bocor (Vodou priest of Black magic) carefully took out three dreadful objects and set them in front of me, to my dismay. I mean, ive participated in countless chicken and goat beheadings for the sake of appeasing the Loa, but this was too intense, despite my training... *HISSSSS* "This is the monkey's paw...it is used to manipulate time and space...this is my Preceptors thumb...each one of his students were granted a piece of him so that we may continue the Tradition with his power in our bosom...finally, this is his ear...I was the only one given this from the Master...this ensures that he will heed my invocation in my magik..." "Before we begin," said the old musty black man, "I need you to make a final offering to the Loa...a simple dollar will do...tis the act of sacrifice in itself that counts..." I took out the only dollar I had and put it inside the bag the old man was holding. He soon set it aside, and reached for three symbols painted on some old parchment paper. I watched as he set them down in front of each of the gruesome objects. "These symbols represent the differents Loa that each of the objects belong to," he said with a grin of assurance. I want you to take out the dollar bill, note the first number of the serial, and simply wave your hand over the one that corresponds to the said number...start here," he pointed to the paw. He picked up the old red bag one more time, and I reached in and took my dollar. The old man stood up, turned around and began quietly chanting a song unknown to my ears. I unfolded the dollar, noted the number as told. I counted slowly 9 times and landed upon the thumb, next to the symbol for ol' Legba the gatekeeper. I waved my hand as I was told. "I am finished Papa," I said vowing to never look at those sights again. He turned back around, continued his song and stared intesely at each object, one by one. "Legba! I hear you! you never failed this ol' man yet! Open the doors!" The old man took each piece of parchement up and held each over the candle flame one at a time...nothin happened for the first two..then *Burst!" the old parchment with Legba's ve-ve (symbol) upon it burst into the unkown in a brilliant flash. "Ah, Thank you Papa Legba," the old man said in a bow. "And this, my son is the source. you see, with these objects you too will be able to see beyond the worlds, hahahahahaha," he laughed that creepy laugh. *HISSSSSS* ...now, I behold these relics...care to join me in my experiement |

Doing 'other' things with Higley's is no doubt a nobel endeavor...but how about THIS other thing...
I thought he did great on Tuesday evening with $942....but last night April 8th in Yuma AZ at a small fair one of 'our own'(Big Kahuna) using my 'How-To' and a Higley gaff, pulled in $1249! Last Night! At a buck a head with kids under 7 Free...that is truely awesome stuff for a single day single-o! I posted that in the Believe it or not topic...just in case you don't get 'there. So while thinking of what elese to do with a Higley...you might think about bringin' home the bacon as well!

Correction...$750+ Tuesday night...it was $942 on Friday (or Thurs. can't remember) and it was $1249 last night.
And Gede...doesn't matter which Higley is 'inside'...it's the 'How-To' idea that can make the $ (or carrots)

I own a few of Doug's props, and they are top-notch, absolute works of art.
But as for Dark Museum ... what IS the effect? I've read the many ads and I can never ascertain eactly what the effect is ("A prediction" is all it ever indicates -- is it just a magicians' choice thing?) You get a bunch of cool props, I understand that part ... but if the effect is uninteresting, the props become nothing more than well-made curios. |

Starrpower...the Dark Museum (Effect) has been praised so much all over the Café for being fun to do and a way to tell a bit of a story with a mental prediction and as an Interesting addition to an act...any act. Bizare, Kids, Mentalist whatever. Just ask Jon Stetson who I hear really has a good time with it...and it also has had an entire book written about it (by Jim Magus) with 44 routines by some other wonderful performers. I tell exactly what it is on the site...ay least as much as can be told without giving it away...that is all I will tell or should be told. There has not been a single negative and there have been many sold. That's about it.

I own one of the first Dark Museums and love it!
No it is not a "magician's choice". It is a force that really shouldn't work so well because it is seems so fair, but it does. But really that is what is offered as a suggested use for the items. There is really no limit for what you can do with the props as they are not tied to any effect in particular, unlike 99% of magic effects available. These are real museum quality artifacts that bring out the best in Bizarre as they are amazing props that just get your imagination going to create something all your own. That is what Jim Magus' book, Midnight in the Dark Museum, is all about. The variety of thinking in that book is truly wonderful. And what's wrong with well-made curios???? Bizarrists can work wonders with well-made curios!

Check this: I was in a tattoo parlor last weekend, a place I regularly visit. I have an old looking little "trunk" style box I keep the Dark Museum in, and I was going to show the artist the effect. Of course, my story is that I inherited the box, and artifacts, from my uncle. So as I am removing them from the box, a woman literally walked off the street because she saw me removing them from the box. I showed her the artifacts, and performed the effect for her, rather than the artist. The effect was incidantal to the props, but the effect blew her, and them, away. She said, and I quote, "OMG, that is just like that movie Jimonjie!" She was freaked out---she said she saw the chupacabra on CNN, and was freaking at the claw.
Higley's work is mind blowing without the effect--but you can make the effect suit your persona and needs. I have blown many, many minds with it so far!!

I like to use a routine I picked up from "Midnight at the Dark Museum" where I "animate" a Big Foot toe by using a Glorpy. Quick and creepy. I've got a bunch of Doug's stuff and will continue to collect and utilize them. He's an incredibly gifted artist (but you'll never hear him refer to himself that way), an incredibly fair and honest businessman and an incredibly good writer (Jesus, what doesn't this guy do...). You have to check out his book on scary dark rides. It's now available in paperback. Looks like I've gotten a little off subject. Sorry about that. Back on track- I also like doing an ashes on arm routine using a Chupacabra claw (once again, right out of "Midnight in the Dark Museum"). It too is fairly quick and to the point. It gets great responses (I use coffee to bring out the message on the arm, and mention that the Chupacabra loves to run wild through the coffee fields of Puerto Rico...).

I just have to get my hands on some of those Higley props! I know everybody says you really don't need them to use routines from "Midnight at the Dark Museum," but the props would make things so much better.
