I need a nice, new silk foulard for my nice, new Kinetic Sphere. Unfortunately, I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to look- and I don't want one that will break the bank. Any recommendations?

Wouldja look at that. You have no foulard, but your Kinetic Sphere. I have a foulard, but my Kinetic Sphere hasn't come yet, lol!
That wasn't supposed to be mean. Anyways, the foulard I bought, was the one at Hocus-Pocus. $13.00 in all, that includes shipping, and I'm not dis-satisfied. http://tinyurl.com/h2c2r My KS should be coming Monday. Wish Dave hadn't have gotten that address mixed up... >_> |

How big are those? It doesn't say on that site. The gimmick on the KS is rather long, I'm thinking at least a 32" foulard is needed; I'm trying for a 36"...
Oh, and don't worry- the Kinetic Sphere is worth the wait. You'll love it

I do believe it's 32" or 36", definitely at least 32". It's rather big. Nice and non-see through, unless you have backlighting. It really is great.

I am not sure what you are looking for. I have made foulards for Dale Salwak and double weight dragon foulards. I have also seen some on ebay. BTW, never work with backlight on a zombie.
You need to figure the size for your arms. You want the zombie (ball) to be in the middle of the fabric. Richard

Okay, let me rephrase this- what's the best indicator of opacity in a silk? What should I be looking for? There's too many generic "zombie foulards" out there, with no real indication of size or quality. I know the best solution would be to buy from a brick-and-mortar store, but there are few in my area (East Bay, San Francisco); which on-line stores have you found to be good for this sort of thing?
Incidentally, I've been playing around with a sheet of rayon, which is lightweight and opaque enough, but a bit too slippery to be easy to use. I've seen polyester suggested as an alternative, but don't know if it has the right qualities.

Let me offer a few suggestions.
1) you are right on the slipperiness of the fabric. Silk will slippery is easier to hold than some polysters or such as it molds around the gimmick. I don't think it or rayon will work. There are some fabric silkies that may work. 2)When I make foulards, I use three layers of 8 momm silk, with a black layer in between. This makes about 27 mm silk plus the added space between the individual silks that help with transparency factor. If I use the Dragon silks, it is a little less as those repro silks are only 5mm each (so it would be about 18mm). Ruth Rice told me what the momme was on her dad's foulard but I forget. I think it was over 20momme. 3)Momme is the indicator of the weight and opacity of the silk . The higher the number the thicker and more opaque the fabric. Hope that helps. Richard

I think you should wait for the kinetic sphere cloth.it's suppose to have many extra functions.

Richard, thank you, that was very helpful. I did a search on "momme" and it answered quite a few questions. It's actually the weight measurement of a specific quantity of silk- about 100 yards at 45 inches wide. Obviously, heavier is also thicker (and therefore more opaque.) Now I know exactly what to look for... and I do know there are some wholesale fabric outlets really close to where I work.
magician 336, I actually don't need any of the extra features; I don't intend to vanish the ball at the end of the routine... but depending on price, I will keep the option in mind.

You spend a $100 one the Kinetic Sphere, but want a cheap cloth. Interesting! As the Sphere uses a different gimmick, I would suggest you go to a high quality fabric store in your area and test and feel different cloths. Tommy Wonder suggest a heavy weight cloth, much like cloth used for men's suits.
http://www.stoners.com sells in the store a Black Zombie cloth for $15.00. I uses a crepe material and it works okay and is inexpensive. Then I got some designed light wieght polyester and sewed black lining material to the back. The late Neil Foster who featured the Zombie in his act, told me he used 2 Rice Dragon silks sewen together. The air pocket that was created between the material made the silks opaque. Rice use to sell double weight dragon foulard, but they are not available as the stock is sold out. Ruth has irregular silks available at a discount. You can email her and request a price for these. Buy 2 and you can sew them together. If you ball is 3 1/2" to 4" your scarf should be 30"'s square. If it is larger then you will have to see were the ball falls on a piece of cloth, this should be the center fo the cloth. Then measure approprately. |

The size of the foulard is a function of how long your gimmick is in order to put your ball in the center of the foulard. Not just how big of a ball your using.
I use a 36" heavy weight silk with a homemade gimmick that is curved.

Red,
I just recieved my KS. Boy, is it great! Anyways, the foulard I linked you to at HP will make the KS be a little to the left, or the right, if you're left-handed. I would suggest looking for a slightly longer one, but this still does me good. I'll admit, the KS gimmick is a tad long, but what the heck, I love it. |

EsnRedshirt, I agree with Bill that this a great opportunity and excuse to head to the fabric store and treat yourself and the KS to the best and fitting fabric your dollar can buy. I don't think any of the stock item foulards were made with the possible consideration of the KS and operator's arm lengths. These factors will require a custom foulard.
When selecting the fabric, take into consideration that you may perform KS with the adaptable zombie gimmick so you need a fabric that is not so translucent for that purpose. Select the fabric and pattern that makes ya happy and drop it off at a custom tailor's shop to have them prepare it with a seam. |

Thanks everyone- ah, the wonders of what you can find at a San Francisco fabrics wholesaler. I picked up some extremely nice black silk at about 50% off; it's lightweight and opaque enough (even in broad daylight) that I may get away with just a single layer over the sphere. Now I'll test it under a few different light conditions to see if I need a second layer (which will be a different color for variety), then find a tailor to get it stitched.

When you have it stitched, make sure it is a flat double turned hems as it will handle better and protect the edges.

The Ball must sit correctly on the scarf...If you have a short gimmick, then you need a smaller Foulard. Also, stitching is important so that it never snags the ball in any way. I personally like a 28" Foulard as I am a somewhat small man, and a 36" Scarf looks rediculous on me. You may want to consider your color, and theme of your act..this wil help determine if you need one with a patern or some design.
