I perform a variant of a certain trick by Harry Anderson that involves a good deal of rubber cement on the skin. Now, up until recently, I have only been having to do this once or twice a month, so peeling the stuff off was not a big issue, but I am now doing this three times a day...
Needless to say, I am getting a bit sore... I know that there is a solvant for rubber cement, but I don't know what it is! I have tried acetone, rubbing alcohol, soap, naptha...Nothing seems to work. Any suggestions? Thanx, Gwyd |

I don't know if there is anything. I just used different parts of my arm. I would also change arms. I know this is not what you were asking it's just what did to lessen the irritation.

Unfortunately I cannot switch arms...One is too heavily tattooed, and it shows the trick, and for the exact effect we want, I'm using the inside bicep, which looks great, but has extremely sensative skin.
Thanks though! I know there must be one...In the instructions for the trick it actually says..."Prep the n****e with solvent" but it doesn't name the solvent. Grrrr... Gwyd |

There is such a thing as rubber cement solvent, it's just not always easy to find. I know how you feel though, I went through the same thing, wondering if anyone carried this stuff.
You won't find it at A.C. Moore, nor The Rag Shop. However, you might find it at a Michael's Arts and Crafts; I did. If not, here's an Internet link for you: http://www.best-testproducts.com/bestine.html

The solvent we used in my former job as a cartographer was Hexaine, unfortunately, direct contact with skin has been linked to nerve damage and other nastey problems. You can try paint thinner or lighter fluid, they should work just as well, but stay away from any open flame, and don't breath the fumes.

I've had good luck with a product called "Goo Gone", a citrus oil based solvent. Someone once told me that orange oil from the local health food store works as well, though I haven't tried it.

Another note on Goo Gone:
I downloaded the MSDS for it off of the manufacturer's site http://www.magicamerican.com/msds.shtml, and even though you're warned to, "Avoid repeated, excessive and prolonged daily skin contact," it also states that, "...this product was shown not to be a primary skin irritant in laboratory tests. Therefore this product is not considered a skin irritant." ...gotta love the internet! Kevin |

Interesting. I've read other threads were the answers were "just rub it off." Yeah, well...I'm so fair, sensitive skinned that rubbing it off only leaves me looking like I've got a serious case of arm Rosacea. I've tried baby oil, alcohol, lighter fluid (naptha), and nail polish remover all to no avail.
FYI - leaving half rubbed off rubber cement on your arms creates a very convincing burn victum for Halloween.

Same here magis6...
And I could do it once a week...But I am doing multiple acts a day...Fair sensative skin...Turns red... The goo gone seems to work without any harm...We'll see how my skin looks by next week. Thanks all! Gwyd |

I will surely have to try that. I've got some around here somewhere.
I would think it works the same as with balloons - the citrus breaks it down.

I use mineral oil to remove latex from appliances in make up work, That might work on the rubber cement and it's gentle on the skin. After you use it, wash with soap and water and apply lotion.

Have you tried Rubber Cement Thinner? It's available in most art stores. Usually right next to the rubber cement.

Rubber cement thinner - acetone. NOT a good idea to have repeated contact with the skin. Carcinogen. Also can cause kidney damage.

Some rubber cement thinner is mineral spirits. That is carcinogenic also. Your citrus based solvents are probably the best thing to use.
Also, there is spirit gum remover available at stores that carry makeup. You don't want acetone (liver damage, brain cancer) but NON-acetone spirit gum remover. Try it and see if it works. It should.

I used to use rubber cement thinner as the "cleaner" for the effect to show that I had no wounds (dabbed a cloth in rubber cement thinner to wipe off blood and rubber cement together). It seemed like I got rashes faster by using the thinner on my arm than I did by just rubbing it off cleanly. I stopped using it the first time as it irritated my skin more. I would not recommend using the chemical rubber cement thinner at all. Use it to make your rubber cement last longer but avoid direct contact with your skin. As far as an alternative, I usually soak a cloth in warm water and it wipes things off easier but not always very cleanly. I don't do it that often because carrying a needle around with me for walk around stuff is not very convenient. Especially the fragile needle that comes with the effect. If I find anything else out I'll come back and post.

Hey guys,
I just bought a tube of rubber cement lately and there are a lot of warnings on the back of it. One of them is that it is considered a carcinogen in California, something that I see other members have seen. I have a medical friend who thinks it's only dangerous if I start sniffing the rubber cement a lot. Can anyone give me some expert opinion? |

Everything has that California label on it.
They should just shorten it to: "Warning: Living causes death"

If it's only considered a carcinogen in California, then you should be safe as long as you don't use it in California.
