As a dentist and a magician, I have to chime in here. I always use magic effects in my office. Randy made an interesting point that there are many people who are so afraid of going the dentist because of either what they previously experienced as a child, or from horror stories they have heard. In my office, all the children (especially first time young children) get some magic effect (even if it's making a coin appear). I want children (and adults) to have fun at my office! And I want to have fun at my office! And yes, I do have a large dental office, and no, I don't keep people waiting while I show a "trick". Like Skip, I try to incorporate effects that are not only magical, but related to either teeth, oral hygiene, etc. Think about if you were a child, and for your first visit the doctor produced a toothbrush out of thin air,or produced a huge colored streamer from a previously empty bag, and made it a great, fun visit - wouldn't you want to keep coming back to the dentist, and take good care of your teeth? I love being a dentist and I love being a magician - I can make people smile! - Joel
May the magic be with you!

The wind up clattering teeth as a standalone device and the huge toothbrush as a production item are good sight gags. What's wrong with being a magical dentist? As a magical lawyer I've marketed myself in both catagories and the cross marketing has been great. A dentist who does magic stands out from the crowd of boring and otherwise scary dentists, puts patients at ease and has a following of kids (and their parents) who love him/her and actually look forward to going to the dentist. I've used the latex gloves/dental dams to perform the penetrating coin and it's a killer effect. Lots of mouth things come to mind: balloon lips/tongue, mouth coils, appearing/disappearing sugar via a tt (with the cavity theme), etc. And the elastics for braces are what keeps your folding coins going. Buy them by the gross...

I thought this topic died a long while back!
I just love the way certain voicy types at the Café have not touched this one. This is how little they care about a certain audience. Even the most vociferous VIP or columnist hasn't touched it. They either missed (fat chance!) or just don't care as it doesn't promote them. jizmagic, as a practicing dentist, mentioned the production of a toothbrush or streamer etc. I would of counted myself lucky to see such as a child. Instead I was subjected to the dificult manners of a dentist who went to prison. Today, I choose to create the magic, that perhaps, I had wished upon then. Fantastic job gentlement. |

Check out the DVD side-fx. It's got tons of doctor themed magic.
Not really made for magicians (more lay people) but it will inspire you. |

Break a tooth pick in half. false transfer one half into your left hand, pick up the remaining half with your hand. shazam! one half has magically transported over to join the other! then go on to do a broken and restored effect maybe?
I think I saw this on daryls fooler's dooler's, but I first saw it in a bar by some old man! |
