I wonder if we can guess the point of this question.

I am very competitive in *some* areas of my life. I play soccer, and am very competitive. But soccer is one of the least important things I do.
Two of the most important lessons I learned was to be able to realize that losing was not in any way related to my value as a person, and to be able to appreciate and enjoy the successes of others.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

I would not like to play a one on one game of basketball with Allen Iverson. That would not be competition, that would be a blood letting. There might be a case where I would like to pit myself against someone even though I had no chance of winning. Just to see what it would be like to try. But you gotta be realistic about the likely outcome.

Oh yeah, people would pay big money to play Iverson. But for me it wouldn't be competition, because on my best day I'd still get destroyed.
Now, I would LOVE to play a round of golf with one of the "Greats". I'd love to play against Tiger. But golf is different. Because of the handicap system a hacker like me can actually have a fair match against a world class golfer. That I would do. If he gave me a ton of strokes, enough to overcome the giant differences in our skill level. I'd play for a few bucks.

In sports you play against a better player you get better.
In magic you play against yourself and you get better. I often look at magic contests like a moment in the movie the wizard of OZ. The wizard handing out the gifts is my favorite part of the movie. The scarecrow wanted a brain - yet in the film was the one with most of the ideas. The Tin Man a heart - Yet he was the sensitive and emotional one. The Loin wanted courage - Yet he showed bravery in the face of danger. The wizard gave them each a trophy and recognized them for who they really were and for the gifts that they had - but did not see in themselves. I like what Payne said because it is the road and what we learn on the road that is important. And I agree it is nice to win - because often when we do - we can learn things about ourselves that others see but we do not! And that can happen even if we do not win.

I am very much a fool as I often forget to thank others in the Café for the many things that I have learned from everyone while I have been here. Thanks again.

Why do magicians help magicians when magicians are their competition?

I compete because I love the andrenalin rush, the nerves, the excitement and everything that goes with competing.
I have competed in many different sports and activities and it always get me pumped up. The point in my opinion of a competition is to create an environment in which talented people are given the opportunity to see if their talents coupled with hard work is worth it. It also gives other people something to watch. Without competition the world would be a dull place. |

Always loved competition; always will. As they said in Wide World of Sports...the thrill of victory...as for the agony of defeat, I think the more you compete, the more you get used to the fact that you can't win every time. So you get this Hemingway-esque grace-in-defeat sort of thing. Also, I read a great quote about competition being a scheme in which others push you to be the best than you can, or something to that effect. That's with respect to things like bridge and chess, which I compete at; with respect to poker...there's all that stuff (adrenaline, ego, whatever else goes along with "the thrill of victory") and money, too!!
Let's all put in 5 bucks and give it to whoever posts the best reply in this thread.
