Hello everyone, I was going to pick up Jerry Mentzer's Counts, Cuts, Moves & Subtlety but then I was looking around and found Jon Racherbaumer's Counthesaurus. For $20.00 more is it worth getting the Racherbaumer book. I have heard nothing but great things about Mentzer's book, but I was wondering if Racherbaumer's book has more photo's. It seems from the table of contents that they cover almost the same moves. I would appreciate any comments.
Thanks |

If I had to choose just one of the two it had to be Counthesaurus.
Counts, Cuts, Moves & Subtelty is a good book but a little out of date (printed around 1980 I belive). Counthesaurus is a big book (209 pages), and packed with exellent photos taken by Jessica Hack. You wont be sorry to spend that extra 20 bucks. Highly recommended. Peo

Yes, even though I have Jerry's booklet, I would sure to purchase Jon's book as well. I would like to explore more of the unique counts in the book.

Thanks for the comments. I guess for the extra twenty it is worth getting Counthesaurus. I have never heard anything bad about Racherbaumer's books.

Here it is 14 years later and now I see it popping up at a few magic shops spiral bound for $40.00. Is it worth that amount? I know inflation plays a role but that is a 100% increase in those 14 years. I have had the Mentzer book and highly recommended it for years. Just wonder how much
(A) Info on the same moves in each book are updated by Jon"s (B) How many more moves are taught in Jon"s book? (it seems to be a larger book) Thanks in advance to anyone who has both and can explain the differences.

I'm in the process of culling my book collection (I've retired and need to downsize)... the pile of magic books I want/need to sell keeps growing... but my Counthesaurus remains safely on my shelf... it's invaluable to me (i.e. I would never part with it). I do have Jerry Mentzer's book... somewhere. At first I thought I did not own it, but it looked familiar so I checked my Penguin order history and found I ordered it years ago... and apparently got busy and never got around to looking at it... I have no idea why... not like me. I'll look for it today, and if I find it, post a comparison.

... I need to add to my above post that I am splitting my time between two houses at this busy time and while Counthesaurus is here with me, Jerry Mentzer's book might be at the other house. I hope not, but if it is, I will not be able to retrieve it until Fourth of July weekend.

Thanks, I did manage to find a full Table of Contents and compare it to my Mentzer book and it does look to have quite a few more sleights and certainly more pages. Plus the fact it is a 9" X 11" book compared to small pamphlet size of the Mentzer book, I would guess it will make a good addition even at the new higher price.

I also went ahead and purchased it. Once it arrived (shrink wrapped in brand new condition) I noticed it vanished from the site. It must have been a one-off warehouse find and I was the lucky buyer. From what I have read thru so far, it is a fantastic compilation of false counts and displays that could be used for more packet type tricks than you could possibly carry. I did find a "very fair review" online --
http://magic-yeti.blogspot.com/2010/04/c......ook.html And a review on Counts, Cuts, Moves & Subtlety by Jerry Mentzer http://magic-yeti.blogspot.com/2008/07/c......ety.html Overall, I am glad I grabbed it while I could and happy to still have a copy of the Mentzer book. Both are fantastic references.

Brian, or anyone who has had this for some time, I started reading it today with some cards in my hands and the very first move taught has several errors. Was there ever an addendum published with any corrections over the years? Even a PDF with corrections available somewhere? Also, are there a lot of mistakes (major or minor) thru the book?
I am fairly sure that I can work thru them and figure out how they should be with a little effort (at least I eventually did the first one) but a PDF of corrections would at least let me know in advance that what I am about to read has an editing problem. Thanks on any info you may have. If there is a thread that you know of that addresses any of these, can you direct me to it. I did not find it in a quick search.
