Since I cannot think of a way to succesfully react against Blaine Bashing in essay form, either on my blog or elsewhere. I have decided to set up a physical experiment. Please support me in my efforts over at my blog
Man In A Boys World In some small way this may turn the green eyes blue and help Blaine bashers to understand how very difficult it is, to maintain the phenomena that is David Blaine. Thanks for your time Dean |

Why do you care so much one way or the other? Why does it bother you personally if someone bashes Blaine?

Aw, c'mon... it can't be that hard to be David Blaine. George Romero's movies are full of guys doing the same act!:)
It's a joke... glad he's successful, just not my cup of tea. That's why they have an off button.

If everyone followed your advice and model then no one would give a rats about 'anything' or 'anybody' we would just sit in our little holes and not care about anyone other than ourselves. We would never react or speak up against anything or anyone we would only care about ourselves. |

Conversely, those of us who do "bash" Blaine also have a right to speak out and an arguable and logical basis to our criticism. It's the marketplace of ideas and as a public figure he necessarily comes under public scrutiny. I applaud your support of Blaine- you also have an arguable and logical basis to your position, but because others don't hold that position doesn't mean you should feel persecuted just because you do.

I too have been reading different topics and agree fully that bashing another artist for his hard work and dedication is wrong

The problem is that some people on the other side of the Blaine popularity fence do not put forth a logical critisism but instead resort to mindless bash. This is what I am recting against. Not the intelectual critisisms. I agree with your post though, but for the record I don't feel persecuted for my attempt, just a little hungry. Anyway I'm out of here now but look (to you all) please try and look upon this as a positive experiment. It's better to be positive. D |

Thanks for your comments Dean. Well I'm certainly not a fan of Blaine but one must give him credit for some of his accomplishments: i.e. raising magic awareness, revitalising street magic and casting aside the tuxedo and spring flowers image in favour of something that engages the MTV generation. Penn and Teller have also done this to some extent, of course. I also agree that comments like "Blaine su#%s" are not helpful. One can say that his performance style is a bit lackluster, he does basic performances of store bought effects, or whatever but just attacking Blaine, ad hominem, is polarizing, inflammatory and does not advance intelligent discourse.

I agree with with Kamus.
I think the reason there is so much bashing is that David Blaine is not a magician's magician. He is not impressing magicians. (At least what he is willing to show on TV.) Most competent magician can probably do most of the tricks he does so there is nothing for magicians to go ga ga over. The ironic part is that we always tell beginning magicans to focus on the entertainment part of magic, and not the techincal complexity of the tricks. Make an impact with people and strike an emotional chord with them. Here is a guy who did just that, and now he is getting bashed for being so "bland". There is a lesson to be learned here.

Seems to me that as a public figure not only does Blaine come under public scrutiny...
but all too often, at least from many magicians, comes under public jealousy. Blaine isn't one of my favorite performers. But the guy should be comended for the risks he took and the success he has reaped. Robert

Blaine did something no one else did and performed magic tricks that people had never seen.
He did intimate magic, with what appears to be every day objects, and brought it to TV and into homes. His block of ice and standing on a tiny platform atop a pole, which I didn't care for, is reminicent of stunts from days gone by where they were done in a public place. Flagpole sitting was one and Houdini's escapes comes to mind. Don't get be wrong. Blaine is nowhere as exciting as Houdini was in that time but maybe he's just trying something new. It's not working for me. |

Everyone I've talked to who has met him in any fashion has been unanimous in saying how rude and unpleasant he is (I am removing all the rude words I've heard.) That might have something to do with it.
Saying folks bash him because he's popular would not explain why no other popular magicians get bashed. Personally I just find he rubs me the wrong way. I thought it was his performance style, but Criss Angel does everything that I didn't like David Blaine doing, but I like Criss Angel. So the only conclusion I could come to is that there is just something about David Blaine the person that just totally fails to appeal to me. Then I heard several people talking about him as the person, and realized I might have been right on target. |

I'll quote Mr. Chris Rock : "everybody's fallin for this magician David Blaine.. are we so desperate that we fall for a trickless magician!? Cut a lady in half, pull a rabbit out of a hat, do something. what's his last trick? I'm in a box and I ain't gonna eat, that ain't no trick, that's called living in the projects.."
Double posters should be shot!

evan: Saying folks bash him because he's popular would not explain why no other popular magicians get bashed. Last I checked there were four seperate threads on TMC about Copperfield being robbed at gunpoint. And not only are some bashing, a few are even outright suggesting that Copperfield set it all up as a publicity stunt. I call that bashing. Again - Blaine may not be one of my favorites - but he's done something no one else has done...create a TV special with magic shop tricks that most likely ALL OF US could perform "better." Magic shop owners have to LOVE David Blaine and should be ordering extra stock of previous "Blaine" tricks like invisible deck etc. With this next special coming up they'll be getting a TON of, "Hey that guy did this one trick with a coin..." bit. That's good money for them. And that keeps magic going. Economics 101. (Sorry, I know this was just a Blaine thread. I return you to your thread) Robert
