Please, please, please, before you post a virus warning to the Café, check to see if it is genuine. I get at least four of these a week, that some well-meaning person has broadcast to everyone on his mailing list. 99% of the time, they are hoaxes. Sometimes they are as much as 10 years old.
Here's where to go to see if a virus is real. Go to http://www.snopes.com . When you do, enter the name of the virus or the subject line in the search box. You will save yourself a lot of embarrassment.

Bill, snopes.com is a good place to check out a variety of stuff that passes through our e-mail systems. I can't count the number of times I've gotten an e-mail about Penny Brown or any number of items. Everytime I do, I always reply to the sender with the snopes.com link. What's funny is when I get an e-mail, I respond with the snopes link, THEN get an e-mail from the sender saying "oops, sorry for sending that" to everyone it was originally sent. Snopes is also a good place to waste a bunch of time on the internet. Lots of stories! It's fun to read stories that I thought were true only to discover they were "suspect" or to read about some of the legends I've heard for ages or to read about stories that were so far-fetched they couldn't be true, only to discover that they were true! Being the strange and unusual individual that I am, my favorite section of snopes is the Horrors section.

I have to tell everybody!
Look out for the new "Irish Virus"! What happens is, you get an email, you open it, and it says "When you read this, please delete all the files on your hard drive. Thank you." Diabolical! |
