Just resently, I have bought a set of 'Black Fox Master Shells' and have been working on a routine. I've been having lots of fun with them.
However, I recently showed my routine to a member of my family. After showing her the trick, she made the offhand comment of "I feel like I've just been had!". This isn't really the reaction that I wanted! I tried very hard not to give the immpression that "HA! I am right and you are wrong", I even tried to craft my routine so it didn't exempilfy that at all. I was just wondering if any of you have any ideas on how to avoid this outcome from Spectators. Many Thanks.
Yours,
Matt Wood |

I believe Lee Asher said something like this in his catch 33 notes: The trick is to make the spectator know that you are trying to entertain them, not scam them. If you present it as a scam, they will react like you just scamed them. If you present it as a trick, they will be entertained.

Don't wait for oppurtunity to knock, throw open the door, grab it by the throat and drag it inside kicking and screaming. Magically yours |

DW, what's the basic outline of your routine? Whit's routine doesn't play like they're being "had." Neither does Bob Kohler's. Once you shift the focus off of them picking the wrong shell, it can become entertaining again.

I think the key to not being regarded as a street hustler would be to stay away from effects based on traditional street cons, like the shell game or a monte.
I sometimes get that response, "I feel like I've just been had!". But only after performances I've been paid for. Rob |

Some people will say that no matter what you do because they know you are a magician. they simply don't want other people think that they are stupid. if you are competing with the the best violin player in the world they would say: "he is the best".

Bob Sheets showed up a fun routine at LVMI that doesn't make them feel like fools. You might check out his stuff, too.

As Bob says, "Who needs a hug?" Great line, great routine.

DW you are taking it out of context. Don't do the shells, monte, or anything like that because people not only may feel they have been had that is the intention and the emotion they want. If lying during presentations also bothers you may I suggest juggling?

The test for all gambling routines like the shells, three card monte, and the chain etc. is to make it fun to lose.
I do it as a public service. Have fun. bob. |

"Step up, step up, step up, my friends for a demonstration in the not-so-fine art of skinning the rubes, conning the marks or, as the hoi-polloi say, taking someone to the cleaners by means of a swindle that looks like an innocent game of chance!
"In this game we will not, I repeat myself for those of you who like myself are hard of seeing, we will NOT be taking bets, accepting wagers or putting money on where the little pea is going to be as gambling is illegal unless you happen to have a casino riverboat and river in your hip pocket or you are the State Lottery. "I am neither, so on with the demonstration for your entertainment, edification and to amaze and delight your eyes and possibly save you some serious loot and from being seriously looted in the future by someone with fewer scruples than I have!" --------------------------- I them bring out ONE shell (my chop cup, as I do not do the shell game) and go into my routine AS IF it WAS the shell game. However, this little bit of schtick would undoubtedly work for someone that would like to do a shell game routine and get people "in the mood to be entertained by a scam." I know that it's worked for me for about 39 years or so in one form or another - please vary it to fit your own personal style. That's all I ask... Lee Darrow, C.H.

If the shell game is a swindle and not a game of chance why r people so in a uproar about criss angel telling how the shell game is done on tv????? the fact of the matter is there is no sure thing, the sucker, I mean the spectator does have a chance of winning at the shell game no matter how slim. If he didn't people wouldnt care anything about criss angel exposing what he did! I don't like it when people say the shell game is a 100% sure-fired swindle. If it is so much of a swindle get your panties out of your behind because of what criss angel did because if it is such a swindle the sucker doesn't have a iota of a chance of winning anyhow
Another thing. people are always trying to wake up people to the shell game on the street and take money out of hustlers pockets. But they don't like it when people like criss angel gets up there and exposes their routines and takes money ot of their pocket. Its something to think about! |

After reading many threads here and else where about C.A. exposing the shell game on TV I’m now convinced more people now think they have a chance to win, to beat the operator than ever before. Some people assume because they think they know how it works they can beat it, yes without a doubt; mankind do love to be cheated. LOL
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.

Being "had" is not such a bad thing, I actually like the overall sensation when it is done to me. It's a mixture of entertainment tweaked with a bit of frustration, but in a healthy sense.
