Just thought I should mention that "Eating the Apple" is actually the most dangerous juggling trick, it has killed more people than any other due to its high choke risk. Just a thought...

Machete juggling is not for beginners. They are much heavier than clubs, and will cause sore hands if done for a long period of time. When I do my stage show I finish with a flaming torch, a machete, and a bowling ball juggling. It is a popular 6 minute routine that always gets a big round of applause.

Although I do respect (if done skillfully) all jugglers that juggle real knifes, I stick to the juggler knifes. I do not care they are fake, I am happy they are fake! I need my hands to perform!!
I do not experiences the adiences cares neither. If you do a nice show and entertain them and not try to convince them it actually are real knifes. (although I can imagine in some acts it is much more impressive it is real knifes. But it depends on the personage you are in your act)(I am a clown(esk)) If you can juggle clubs there is no danger in juggling Juggler knifes. |

No one that I have ever seen, or heard of uses REAL knives, because the first time you pick them up to practice your fingers will be on the floor, and your career will be over. I use Bryan Dube's juggling machetes.

Well the same with chainsaws no? One fault is too much.
But you are sure no jugglers juggle real knifes? Just have to be very sure, and know what you are able of and trust on that and yourselves. I mean there's people walking high (tight)ropes without safety net. And I have not personaly see people falling to dead but for sure heard of great ropedancers who fell to dead. I can understand the philosophie though that you need to be completly trusting on yourself, no on the safety nets. However nothing for me, no way!! (I rather trust on the safety nets then on myself!) |

To all beginners,
Even though the word fake is being used to describe juggling knives, please be aware that you can still cut yourself with them. They are after all still made from metal and if you trap your fingers between two blades and scissors action may occur and thus cut you. It won't be overly serious, but it still really hurts.

IF THERE IS A JUGGLER WHO USES REALLY SHARP KNIVES IN HIS, OR HER ACT LET THEM SPEAK UP NOW, because I can't answer for all jugglers, just the sane ones.

What knives could you use if you wanted them to appear real, rather than a prop?
Personally I use axes. What about the rest of you?

A friend of mine does axes, and bowling balls in his act, and his elbows are not holding up very well. I know you are a young man, but the elbow is a very vulnerable joint. At my age I'm very careful with my knee, and elbow joints. Al Angello

In this world of risk assessments, health and safety, public liability insurance etc. anybody who juggles real knives is asking for a very large law suit against them if anything ever went wrong. You use props that look dangerous but aren't not just for your safety but also for your audiences. Anyone who doesn't think of his audience shouldn't be performing.

I totally agree.
But don't you think juggling knives look fake? Even the dube knife doesn't look like a knife people would recognise. Is there such a thing in existence? Ros

Nigel was that a shot at me or what? I work things like tattoo conventions... Im one of under a hundred sword swallowers in the world and 75% of us usualy die as a result of sword swallowing. I AM VERY CONCERNED WITH MY SAFTY AS WELL AS THOSE AROUND ME.
I don't use fire for this reason..ever! Also think about this if a dube knife is still "real" enough to cut a spectator if it hit them think about how that news paper will read..It will say "audience cut by knife" not "audience member cut by prescion cut dulled down juggling prop". If you are juggling in close proximity to you audience then real knives would be a bad idea. If you are both working at a good distance and have a good cascade that's another story. REGARDLESS OF WHAT GOES WRONG IF SOMTHING DOES ITS A NIGHTMARE. If you were doing ring flight and it wipped a lose diamond across the room into someones eye then its a nightmare. I have head storys about spectators losing fingers in unicycles while helping prop the juggler up. Should everyone not unicycle now? Also Nigle what about people who juggle chain saws. The saws are real. I know for a fact that most chain saw guys don't remove the chain! So should these brave souls not be performing? Its just a question... where do we draw the line? Roslyn go buy 3 kitchen knives with airated blades. The should like like the kind from the flick halloween. The aiating is like a cerated looking edgework to the blade. Now grind down the blade and round the tip. This is the cheapest and most realistic set of knives you will ever own. The airated blade makes the knives look incredibly sharp and they also give a great sound when you rub them together. They have weight simmilar to a flair knife but are still great for juggling. These knive should even be saver than the dube due to thier lighter weight. Keep tossin Anton James |

Its all in the spectators minds. I have neever had anyone in the audience to question my juggling knifes. (Dubé) Even if it doesn't look like a "real" knife, they look a bit like something from the movies. And people tend to get that metal that is shaped as a knife will hurt you.
Jugglers juggle all kinds of things that "normal" people never have seen, heard of or even touched. If you say it is knifes, it is. /Ark

Anton,
Thanks I'll have a rumage and see what I can come up with. Ark, I understand what you're saying. And I've performed with many different types of knife over the years (Dube, Viper, Beard... etc.). I'm just looking for something that I'll be happy with. The problem is I know they're fake, so I'm just not happy. I'm after something that looks like it could've come from a butchers or the kitchen, but wondered if others have already found something that works for them that fits this style. Cheers for the help guys, Ros

Excuse me, did you say 75% fatalities from sword swallowing? Don't fire eaters also shorten their lives considerably from inhaleing toxic fumes? That can't be fun. Al Angello

Regardless of thickness of steel that is used in home made, or factory made juggling knives, it can still rip you up.
I made a set of 13 inch bowie knives out of 1/4th inch plate, then proceeded to catch badly and rip off half my thumbnail. Personially I like juggling my machettes better, 7 dollars from Harbor Freight, a lttle cutting here, grinding there, and the handles are comfortable and don't catch anymore. And if I wanted to get decorative on the blade, I have a plasma cutter for that option. |

Yeah Fire breathers have it bad to. The diffrence is sword swallowing is like an imediate death usualy and fire is like dieing from smoking. Unless you have a bad blow back.

Anton,
I wasn't having a go at you personally. However I stand by what I say. Everyone should always do their very best to limit the chances of an accident. One time when I was doing a walk of death (juggling with knives over an audience member) someone turned out all the lights. As it happens I can juggle blind and caught all the knives but if I hadn't I would have been glad I was using fakes. Nigel
