I always open with a fish production. I have been working on a a couple different methods on the market, for repeat shows.
And it hit me: when a dove worker produces a second or third dove, no one says "how boring, another dove." If done well, multiple productions build into a whole routine. Why couldn't this happen with fish? I am thinking of routiing a whole production act (4 minutes or so) around fish productions, culminating in what I consider the most magical of the productions, aerial fishing. I am considering the use of goldfish and bettas, though of course all in separate bowls. By the end, this routine in my head ends with about 5-6 bowls or glasses, all with live fish. As to the travel hassle, I have that worked out actually. |

Sounds like you're really not talking about a fish production in the same way a dove is produced, because doves are usually not produced in cages, while you're discussing producing bowls of water that just happen to contain fish. This concept might have more luck being discussed in the boxes and tubes section. There are many tricks that end up with the production of a bowl of water (with or without fish) like the West Gate Bowl production (or Aldini's variation), the Kuma Tubes ending with production of a round bowl of water (w/wo fish) which turns out to be larger than the tube it was just produced from, a variety of hat loads, etc. Is this the kind of act you have in mind?

Jim, yes and no.
In some cases, the bowls will be magically produced with the fish in them. In other cases, a fish will be produced as if from nowhere, then dropped into a waiting bowl. It is not just bowl after bowl. |

I like the concept. I believe I saw a Chinese act that did something like this.
How about poking an orange silk into a hand and changing it to a fish? Just keep brainstorming and their is no reason it would not work. Just remember to keep it all visible from the audience. Richard

How long can a fish survive out of water for a production?
|
revlovejoy Special user Pennsylvania 765 Posts |
I wouldn't deprive a fish of water.
But since you ask, a lot longer than you might think. I used to be in the reef keeping hobby. I learned everything from a shop owner/hobbyist who kept corals and fish for years upon years. She had a yellow tang over 17 years old. She also had a blue paracanthus (aka hippo tang - like ellem degeneres in finding nemo) that twice, had jumped out of the tank. She found it on the floor after what was likely hours each time. Each time she put the fish back in the water, and did fish CPR - fanning water into the gills. That fish lived over 15 years. She told me that unless a fish's eyes were completely dry, you could resuscitate it. Extreme example, and not one I'd recommend trying to recreate. But it isn't the lack of water that is as concerning as the concentration of still water while traveling that ends up full of fish waste unprocessed. |

In another thread you mention that you have Tarbell on CD, volumes 1-5. Check out volume 5- the Magic of the Bambergs, for some fishy routines that are so old they would be new again.

Viking magic has come up with this unique device to produce Goldfish in the bare hand. Just found it while browsing the site.

You have the areal fishing??? My partner has been looking for that! Might I enquire where you got it or found how to rig it?
The fish production act sounds like a lot of fun! Keep us posted as it progresses. Gwyd |

I had seen that on your site, but she was looking for the pole method.
Personally, I like the Stull better... Gwyd |

I was just thinking that aerial fishing would be great for what revlovejoy is working on.
And as gwyd said I have been looking for this act. I checked both sites but what I'm really interested in finding is the one that uses a specially made fishing pole. I don't want to give out too many details, but that is the style I am looking for. The one on vikingmagiccompany might still work. I do a joke in my act with a fishing pole and thought it would be great to produce a fish. A fake one at the end of the pole but then when I take it off and go to place it in the bowl... Surprise it's real! Does anyone know where I can find the one with the fishing pole?

Owens may still be able to make the "fishing pole" method that you refer to that holds multiple fish. There is currently the "stand-up" version that mac King performs that just produces a single fish. Not long ago I saw the "fishing pole" method that you refered to being sold on a mail order site. I will look and see if I can find it, but the props seemed to be of not the greatest quality (plastic pole).
The Stull bowl is a different method, and as Richard said, you never have to touch the fish. I saw Hughes Magic's Stull bowl and baits at the SAM Convention this year and they were beautiful. Cris |

If time permits, in the next year or so I may make up a fishing pole. But right now I am swamped with work and do not have the time to set things up to make it. Believe me making the baits themselves is time consuming.
Chris, thanks for the kind words. it was nice to finally get to meet you. I owe you an email or two. Richard

Rev, I like your idea of fish productions and you are wrong with your quote: " when a dove worker produces a second or third dove, no one says "how boring, another dove." I for one get tired of dove productions. They seem so antiquated to me. But then that's just me. You don't see many fish productions these days(Mak King has one of the best) and I think you would be exclusive and original to produce fish from small and up to seemingly impossible sizes; i.e. very large for you finale. Maybe putting them into a large aquarium and then having them all dissapear similar to a dove cage vanish would really be neat.

The one you were doing with Chris was mine that I furnished to Chris. Chris had done the spinning on it for me.

In the special where David Copperfield walked through the great wall of china, there is a short focus on Chinese magicians. One of them has a really nice act involving fish.
First, he covers a tank of water, and when he lifts the cloth, there are dozens of gold fish inside. Then, he takes a rope and throws one end and when he pulls it back, there's a fish hooked to that end. He throws the other end and the same thing happens, so there's now a fish on both ends of the rope. Very nicely done.
