If you're at all familiar with the name of Tony 'Doc' Shiels, it's probably through his writings on mentalism and bizarre magic.
Not too many people know that during his performing years he had a touring tent show which featured illusions like the headless woman. To pull the crowd he performed the Cups and Balls outside the tent. In fact it's his favourite routine and the one he's done most often. Last year I republished The Shiels Effect, a manual on achieving publicity as a mentalist. During my correspondence with Doc, it turned out he had written a manuscript back in the 1960s on the Cups and Balls. It's not about tricks or moves but an in-depth look at the cups and balls and its performers over the centuries. Certainly of great interest to anyone with an interest in the trick, whether you perform close-up or on the street. If republished it would sell for $10 - $15. Instead we've decided to release it as an ebook that you can download. There's no charge. It's free. I suggest you print it out and have it comb bound at your local office supply store. Click on http://www.theshielseffect.com and then click on The Expert Escamoteur's Equipment. That will take you to the download page. I hope you enjoy it and we'd welcome your comments. |

Thanks for setting this up. I'll take a look at it ASAP, and tell the world what I think! Well, I just got back from perusing this, and I can say that everyone who does the cups and balls really should download this e-book, and read it. How can you lose?

I'm excited about this. I'm printing my copy even as I write. I keep it next to the Hocus Pocus Jr. e-book that Bill so kindly offered a while back.
Can't wait to read it. Joe H |

Great - I'm looking forward to reading this. Any booklet on the cups & balls is always welcome, but if it's free as well...
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

Nice.
I do not have to pay to get it bound, though. My brother's college binds books for free |

Thank you Quentin for this ebook. A few days ago I was thinking about the topic and curious about where to find such information. I've developed into a Cups & Balls-aholic and each day the illness spreads to yet another part of my brain. That you provided it free of charge is like a final load of sorts.

I will be downloading this book later tonight.
FYI... Quentin has also been very kind to offer some of his other writings to magic clubs for download and publication on their websites. He is also a model Ebay seller! Quentin, you are a kind person and an asset to the magical fraternity! ~michael

Delighted that the ebook has been well received. Thank you for your comments.
While not pertaining to close-up magic I've posted an article by Leslie Melville about Maurice Fogel and the Mindreading Chicken on the website (see first post above). Then click on "Articles". If you have any interest in the history of magic or mentalism, I think you'll find it fascinating. |
