It has been reported that David Blaine has suffered some liver damage. According to the report, the challenge had taken a toll on his body, including liver damage, pins and needles in his feet and hands, some loss of sensation and rashes, said Dr. Murat Gunel, who heads Blaine's medical team and is associate professor of neurosurgery at Yale University School of Medicine. His medical team and trainer said they would talk in detail about his condition at a news conference later today (Tuesday).
As early as on the second day of his challenge, Dr. Gunel said there was evidence that Blaine was suffering liver failure; the medical team consulted with medical experts at NASA before stabilizing his condition. NASA was consulted because Blaine's underwater environment was similar to the weightlessness experienced by astronauts in outer space. The doctor said Blaine had agreed to allow researchers at Yale to examine him after the stunt to see what they can learn about how the body responds to the environment underwater. I knew I was right.......Blaine really IS a "space cadet" |

What would cause liver damage? I do not understand why? He spent 44 days in a box with the same food supply, so it can not be do to food, because he was fine. People spend months in space, in total weightlessness and are fine. So my question is, is this fact or fiction to create an on going audience? And if it is fact, then why?

Ask him yourself. Dr. Gunel can be reached at 203-737-2096 or email to murat.gunel@yale.edu

I would hypothesize the difference is in the composition of the fluid he was immersed in. Water will absorb into the skin, thence into the circulatory system. The liver functions as the "cleanser" of the circulatory system. Hence the interest in the prolonged submersion.

Main question for me is this: Is liver damage a permanent condition, or can it be reversed?

You can take this one to the bank. The liver is the most forgiving organ in the body. It can revive itself easily unless of course some disease is involved. Proper diet and medication will put Davids liver back to good as new.
The liver test was most likely based on blood work results which would show his levels above or below normal function. I'll stick with my original opinion of David and say he knew all the factors and possibilities going into this stunt. He would know about the possible liver damage. His PR people will milk every last bit out of this. Best, Tim |

Depends on the amount of damage and what kind of damage has been done. The body tends to heal itself either by tissue regeneratin or overcompensating in other organs, however, damage such as scarring, and necrosis are irreversible. I don't think the damage to Blaine's system was that severe and he should suffer no ill effects....That is IF the reports were true and not just PR bullcrap. It is quite obvious that the drama had to continue because the morning after the show aired, television and radio morning shows, both local AND national, were tearing Blaine apart. If only Americans had enough sense to do what the British did when he sat in the box for 40 days.....They really gave him a hard time over there...bad enough that he won't go back to perfomr in the UK again.

Tearing him apart? What kind of things were they saying?
