Performer – a Review –Fantastic Affordable show system
For over 6 months I was selected as a Beta Tester for a New Show controller for music in our act. I was not compensated nor do I have anything to do with the company who makes it. I also (at the time of the writing) have not met the designer. It has been tested in the rigors of daily shows for months. It is called “Performer” Features: • Uses an inexpensive RF (Non directional) off-the-shelf remote available at many local stores • Shows the entire name of the Cued song on the screen! • Allows you to scroll through your Playlist at any time to select a random song • One button auto fade of song to pause and cue next song (of course!) • Complete volume control Up and Down from the remote • When Started up -- your first song and everything is ready • You can choose Any Background behind the text including a picture of the trick itself. This allows you to verify the correct song per effect at a glance from across the stage or living room. There are other benefits and features and last week I found out that several other professionals are using this now. The configuration of the system is simple. It uses a laptop, the Airclick remote by Griffin and this very special software. I bought a little 12-inch ibook laptop from eBay for just over $300. And plugged the tiny receiver in. You could use your own laptop but I really like the idea of making this a dedicated machine (that just happens to have a CD player and internet browser already!). I have owned or used so many of the other black box controllers for a decade with MiniDisc, iPods, CD, and even Cassette players. I believe the first one I bought was in 1986! I borrowed for use models I did not have. I have a pretty good perspective on strengths and weaknesses of them. None compare to this. Current release price for this is Only $150.!! (this includes the Small Remote, Tiny Receiver and software) If you are considering starting off or upgrading to a new system that will cost a fortune (and wait on the backorders) I highly recommend that you consider trying this first. You won’t go back. I have begged for weeks to Jason to release this and he finally gave me permission to post. He is a member of the Café’ and goes by MR2Guy so drop him a PM if you need one. Four Stars **** Recommended GLOD

Some time ago, I posted on the Café about how I was using the Airclick with my laptop. I then received an email from Jason (MR2Guy) asking if I wanted to beta test his new product that would be coming out.
Just like Walter, I have never met Jason, nor do I have any affiliation with his business. I have been so excited as I have used The Airclick Performer over the last month, in shows of all sizes. Right now I am in Texas to perform in a church tomorrow for 3 services....each service is expected to have around 2,000 people in the audience. What will I be using with confidence? The Airclick Performer! I am preparing a more lengthy review and endorsement which I will post later in the week....so stay tuned!

Sounds great. Can you comment on the range of the remote and if it can go through walls and such?
Also how do you connect your PC to your amp? Thanks. |

Glod,
Nice find. Is this some special software? I found this: http://www.ysgyfarnog.co.uk/utilities/winampremote/ This Winamp plugin allows you to use the $30.00 AirClick USB remote control from Griffin Technology with Winamp. It works for me. But I am curious on more specs on the Performer remote. Does it have a better noise filter and range? What are the differences? G0THIKE |

Hello GOTHIKE
I am aware of your success in using WinAmp plug-ins with the Airclick. I really commend you for your contributions on the Café in the area of laptop control as a solution. Performer uses the standard Airclick Remote but more on ways to alter that may be forthcoming. This is indeed some very special software. The look and feel is very natural for performing. Obviously the Airclick USB was made to control Playlists remotely right out of the box but I needed more than standard control from a distance as I glance on the screen. Little things like large uncluttered text with optimized playlist scroll speed, beautiful status line fade control, fade to pause and cue next song waiting, pause in place, and playlist pop-up have been painstakingly refined by Jason. I would have called this program ready for prime-time a long time ago but he tweaked and tweaked to perfection. You really have to use it to appreciate it. It's kind of like the differences between cars. They both use the same controls and get you there, but one would be radically different in the feel. There has been a lot of thought put into our needs as performing artists.

Glod,
I would post more finds and ideas but I feel a little bad taking some customers from VSM, ShowTech and the other systems. Recently I was using a Nokia cell phone to control Winamp thru bluetooth for the fun of it. That Winamp plugin to use the Airclick USB was developed by some other guy. I don't have software programming skills. The Airclick Performer sounds like it has the same functions as Winamp but with fewer bells and whistles than what you have told me so far. I could be wrong but I haven’t tested the software yet or have seen it. I try to be fair, honest and impartial when I recommend and review items. Maybe Jason can have a 30-day trial version of the software so people could test it, review it and make a buying decision. I would love to review it myself and do a comparison and maybe suggest some ideas. Winamp is a little technical; it wasn’t developed specially for magicians to control their shows so there is a learning curve to use the software. But from what I am guessing the Airclick Performer software seems custom-made for average people with little knowledge of computers and more ready out of the box and Griffin Technologies has a well-developed product line and Jason is very supportive. I posted a demo of AirClick Performer so you can see what it looks like in action:
Performer Demo It's rather large, so after it loads, you need to scroll down the page to hit the "play" button. Enjoy Jason

I'd DEFINITELY like to take a look at this!!!!
I currently use the VSM 7.5 but the 'riggers of the road' are starting to take their toll so lately I've been considering the options of an upgrade. The VSM has been great and I love the look of the icue duo, the only problem for me is that Kelly Duro is one of the most rude and unpleasant people I've ever had the misfortune to deal with. I've shot him a couple of questions over the years and the response has always been a LOT less than friendly. The feature of having the song title on the screen just about floored me, this is exactly what I have needed. What is the remote like, is it hand held? Is it finger-palm size? I currently use the belt remote with the VSM but with all the features of the Airclick performer I could always adapt. Cheers Billy |

Billy,
It can be finger palmed, worn on a belt, or just be in your pocket. I am testing the product also, and I can say that the system is definitely worth looking into and Jason is very supportive and willing to talk to you in person if needed. Customer support is always the true key to a good product. Jason has a winner on his hands. Stand by for a future review and more news!! James Adamson http://www.seam2006.com

PM MR2GUY and I am sure he will be glad to help you and update you on the status of the initial release, as he has already added some additional functions to the software that I have now.

Oh, we've spoken on the phone, and he promised to get one to me, and was gonna overnight it, but that was 2 weeks ago. Apparently there was a problem with the one he was gonna send, unfortunately. I'm still waiting....sigh...

Jason does have a day job and only had so many units for testing and a limited # of people testing for him, rest assured when the offical release is made you will not be disappointed. I know that a lot of hard work has gone into the product so far.

Hey, that's a new one. I'm used to saying, "I wish they made a Mac version." Nice to see it goes the other way occasionally.
