Here are some tricks I often do that I consider self-working:
1. Gemini Twins - More Self-Working Card Tricks by Karl Fulves 2. That's Impossible - ETMCM #6 by Larry Jennings 3. Untouched - ETMCM #4 by Daryl 4. Bottoms, Seconds & Centers Demonstration - Card Magic of Nick Trost 5. Further than That - ETMCM #1 credited to Stewart James 6. Play it Straight Triumph - ETMCM #6 by John Bannon 7. Siamese Stab - Semi-Automatic Card Tricks, Vol Two by Steve beam What ones do you use?

Hi,
I use: 1. Play it Straight Triumph (maybe the best) 2. Timely Departure - Smoke & mirrors (John Bannon) 3. Overkill (Paul Harris) 4. Triple coincidence (John Scarne) ----> Very good trick |

The ' Do as I do' in the one deck version is my favorite. Deck is split in 2, you pick a card, spectator picks a card and both end up reversed in the deck.

Only 3 responses. I'm surprized. Are the rest of you too proud to admit you do self-working tricks. It doesn't seem to bother some of the big pros like Lennart Green, Harry Loryane, Daryl, etc.

Woh there plano I only just arrived. I use one where specs card is reversed in deck and a packet of Aces transpo. Apart from that I do very few self working tricks according to the definition argued out in the previous posts. I think that there are some self working gems but they are fewer in number than gems that are even using very basic sleights so I choose to only do what I consider the best of the best in self working tricks. I will have to look up some of the ones that you guys have suggested and have a look.

How about 'The Piano Card Trick'? Hey, if it was good enough for 'The Professor', it's good enough for me!

Airship: See. That's what I'm talking about. Many of the GREAT magicians used self-working tricks. Today that's looked on as "low class". There are many, many great self-working tricks used by the pros today. I'd like to know what they are.

The Piano Card Trick is #98 in 'Scarne on Card Tricks'. It's great for one-on-one especially with kids, as it keeps their hands busy which focuses their attention. It's a great first trick to teach a kid, as it involves no fancy moves, and doesn't require knowledge of card suits or values, just the number of cards (less than 10 apiece) left in each of two piles.
Besides Dai Vernon ('The Professor'), Scarne says Nate Leipzig, John Mulholland, and Francis Carlyle also performed this trick.

2 tricks from Mark Wilson's book
Fantastic 5 - I use to get 4 aces into my hand Big Ben (Using a deck of Joker cards) - which I use as a closer. If I can do a deck switch. My routine ends with a table covered with joker cards which are also my business cards - I had cards printed with my contact information - with a JOKER center.

Let's see...yes, 'The Haunted Name' from Fulves' "Self Working Card Tricks" is a good one, as well as many others in that book.
I do also a trick I found in a Silvan's Italian book ("Trattato di Magia" i.e. Treatise on Magic) that leaves people astonished if well performed (You guess the selected card in a group of five that You put into a jacket pocket). Unfortunately I don't know how it's called in English, although I'm sure it can be found somewhere in English magic literature. |

TGPlano, Gemini Twins is one of my three favorite card tricks. I do not use random cards, however -- after letting the spectators shuffle the deck, I "search" through the deck and pull out the King of Hearts and the Queen of Diamonds. "Would you like me to cut the deck? Yes? No?" If yes, simple false cut.
I then hand the deck to the spectators and explain that they should imagine that they are running a dating or matchmaking service, and they have to select numbers to find the King's perfect mate, and the Queen's perfect mate. This is a simple, simple effect, but you can invest it with a lot of your own jokes/patter/philosophy about speed dating, on-line matchmaking services, traditional Jewish matchmakers, what makes people compatible, do opposites really attract -- the possibilities are virtually endless. Untouched is another great one, but do not do in the same set as Gemini Twins. (In fact, I usually start with sleight of hand stuff, then work any self-working stuff in later.) Both of these are excellent precisely because the spectator gets to handle the cards at all times. Reinforce this in a "re-cap." Scarne's Triple Coincidence -- a tremendous advantage of this trick is that you can do several sleight of hand effects with one of the decks BEFORE you bring out the second. Nick Trost has a similar effect in his "Tricks With Two Decks" chapter (I believe) that has a beautiful bonus kicker: the four cards selected by the magician will magically transform into the four selected by the spectator, after having shown to be indifferent. Although everything is examinable at the end, the disadvantage is that BOTH decks must be pre-set. Still... a terrific opener, and if the four are Aces you're set to go into your favorite assembly trick. |

I got this last week my copy of "Scarne on Card Tricks", and I'm still flipping trough the pages...can I ask You which ones, in your opinion and experience, are the most effective tricks ? I just read Traveling Aces and Scarne's knockout Card Trick and I liked them.

Play it Straight Triumph and JC's Super Closer are both on the Easy to Master Card Miracles DVDs. I couldn't tell you which ones off the top of my head, go to llpub.com and look it up.
Power of Poker is in John Bannon's book Dear Mr. Fantasy. |
