Purely for the record. Colapsing tophats are called "Opera Hats". Aledgedly because, when colapsed, they fit neatly between seats at the opera. Well made opera hats are completely wearable.

I use one for card manipulations and to steal a load of silks.

I think the audience expects to see a top hat even if you don't wear it. It's the tag of a magician.

You are right when I show up at a party with top hat, and suspenders on people come over to me and say. "you must be the entertainment" it is part of my uniform.

I don't wear my top hat, but I do use it a lot. I use it as stage decor sometimes, I use it in a few of my routines, and sometimes I use it to carry my bunny out so the kids can see him up close at the end of the show.

It's too bad Dube doesn't sell colored top hats like the derbies. I like the look of his felt tophat, but need a color other than black.

My Top Hat is my way of holding onto the past, I highly recommend using one. Mine is BIG & bulky and attracts a lot of attention. Darkwing is correct in saying it's the "Tag of a Magician".

If you look around (Ebay, Antique stores, historical reenactments etc.), you can still find Top Hats from back in the day made of Beaver felt. Talk about an "Authentic Look".

When performing, if I am not wearing my Top Hat, I am wearing my black, 40-gallon Stetson Cowboy Hat in my Wacky Wild West Show.

I was looking for a top hat with secret compartment. Anyone know of any dealers? (load large enough to produce live rabbit)

Abbott's Magic Co. used to sell a hat like that . You could contact them to see if they still make them.

I use a top hat in one act I do. I walk on stage and produce my tophat and cane at the same time. It gets a great reaction from layman just because, and from magicians as well because they can't figure out where the hat came from. Come on, you know the old waving the silk around and BOOM a cane appears, your mind is to preoccupied with that!

He he..... just one of my specialties!

David is correct. Abbott's sells a gimmicked Top Hat.

Mintonmagic,

I agree with the top hat and cane - I do the same thing, but not at the same time - top hat first and then cane. The top hat 'explains' the cane for me.

I have seen posts elsewhere questioning why magi use archaic items like canes instead of everyday items. I understand the posters point - but we CAN make more unusual items relevant to our act - and to me nothing says magic - like a top hat.

Slightly off topic - has anyone seen the Men in Coats pull the top hat out of the rabbit? Nice Twist.

I use a 1920's German Black Silk Opera Hat, and I use it throughout my act.

I was happy to get some top hats from my grandfather when beginning to perform magic. One was a collapsible one, the silk soon got broken. But with some semi-elastic cloth I could renew the hat, now it is violet with black lining. It is perfect to show empty simply by taking it out of the suitcase in closed condition and opening it afterwards.

Into a standard non collapsible top hat, I built a bottom compartment (1.5 inches high)with a flap. The hat still looks empty (black velveteen inside), after showing empty I tell a (sitting!)spectator to grab inside and take out what is inside - he/she finds nothing and tells so - believe me it works fine!

And after some years I found a hatmaker in Altenburg/Thüringen (Germany) still producing tophats, so I now have one fitting my tails (vanilla-white).

A black trilby fedora does it for me! Though it has become a trend in pop celebrities, it gives people the sense that I'm a performer from the get-go. Many interesting pantomimes with a hat also add to my performance style. I do have a top hat but it is much to big (and I look rediculous in it). Getting a hat adds some class to your act, if that's you shtick.

I recently saw Bob Dylan wearing a top hat just like mine. It made me feel very hip.
