I recently bought this e-book and read it "from cover to cover" several times, followed every step it suggested and I have to say it has vastly improved my performance.
Just by reading the first few chapters I noticed places in my performance where I was going wrong and with just a little work and following the steps show my act has improved so much. I no longer find my self panicing over my performance I just go out, follow what has been said and find the magic literally flowing through my fingertips! |

Thank you Andrew, your words are very kind and much appreciated!
Whilst my offer has only been on the Café for a few days, Andrew has had access to the book for much longer, as a magician known personally to me. Whilst many will feel that this will impair his impartiality in terms of a review, I can assure you that his thoughts are honest. Now that this thread has been started, all of the other readers of this manuscript can feel free to post their thoughts on it here! Thank you Liam Gilbert

I have recently received a PM from a Café member who is reading 'Close up Theatre' at the moment, so this is the first totally impartial review that I have receieved, I hope the sender does not mind me quoting him here.
"Just the beginning gives me the impression that it is a great contribution to magic" Tony Noice Thank you Tony for those kind words, more reviews to follow. Incidentally FIVE copies of the book now remain free of charge! Liam

Liam,It is very well written and informative.Step by step your suggestions will improve anyone who wants their magic to have more impact.More seasoned magicians will know much of what is here as some of these type of things have been covered by Henning Nelms,Tommy Wonder and Eugene Burger. But you do explain things more in a step by step way then these authors.I think a lot of magicians know deep down that they would like better ways of presenting what they already know but it's not easy!I mean I'm reminded of Peter Samelson saying in his book that it took him seven years to find out why he wanted to show people Roy Waltons' 'Card Warp'.
Your tips will help though if you are going to sell it in the future adding 2 or 3 examples of tricks will help sales. That's the nature of the beast these days! I love the Oscar Wilde quote!

Fully agree with all of your sentiments Mark, thanks very much for your time and your input.
I think perhaps the key point you make is that "More seasoned magicians will know much of what is here". This is indeed correct, and the book was written with the beginner more in mind. It is a text intended to help somebody but together a Close-Up act with theatrical values in mind, so that there magic makes "theatrical sense, rather than a string of non-sensical magical palaver" as it is expressed in the foreword. Once again thank you for taking the time to read it, and I am delighted that your responses are complimentary. Liam

The subject seems interesting but where can we find this ebook?
Also I don't have enough posts to follow the link to the thread you mentioned, is there a way to gain access to this offer ? Thank you in advance. |

Well, we could just start throwing in two word posts like "I agree" all over the place.
But assiming we're not willing to do that, then what should we do? |

Hi Guillom, the reason that you have to have a certain number of posts to access the thread where the e-book is advertised is to place some restriction on it in an attempt to ensure that only magicians can access magical secrets.
Not to suggest that you are not a magician of course, but this is the reason! However, even if you could gain access to the offer I'm afraid that due to a hugely fast response the offer has already been closed, and I am now awaiting the reviews of the current readers before I reopen the offer. Thanks Liam

Hi Liam,
I am sending you an email with an expanded version of my notes, but for the record, here are some general thoughts... „« I like the fact that the book is written more in the style of a classroom lecture than of a textbook (a style that is, at once, agreeable and comfortable to follow along with). I also love the individual section reviews. Here is where a more textbook-like structure comes into play and conveniently summarizes the key points as a future reference tool for the reader. „« This has the makings of an important contribution to the teachings of performance magic. I truly enjoyed the book and agreed with the majority of the content. The format was carefully thought out and served the subject well. Good job setting things up in the beginning by not assuming that the reader has knowledge of the theatrical elements of style (story, conflict, suspense, climax, resolution). Had you neglected this piece you may have lost a portion of your readership along the way. I hope that you will continue to add upon the lessons in this book, and I hope that I will be granted access to any future revisions along the way. Nice work! Thank you for sharing. Best regards, Evan (aka Magiguy) |

Thank you Evan, your thoughts are very kind and the detailed responses you sent me by email are very interesting and valued and will certainly be taken into account when making any changes to the text.
You note that "the book is written more in the style of a classroom lecture" - This is very true, and something that I strived towards whilst writing the text. As 'MarkyMark' noted the performance theories inside have similarities to the likes of "Henning Nelms, Tommy Wonder and Eugene Burger" however I have attempted to make my content a little more up to date, and EASIER TO FOLLOW, hence the step by step lecture style. Thanks once again, and I will keep you updated with any revisions Best Liam Gilbert

I would like to thank everyone who has reviewed so far in both private emails/PM's and publically on the Café. Can I PLEASE ask everybody who requested a free copy to post or send me a review! Even if it is just a few words saying that you enjoyed the book it would be much appreciated.
The following quotes are summarise what has been said so far about Close Up Theatre. I have included all reviews, positive or negative! “Just the beginning gives me the impression that it is a great contribution to magic” “It is very well written and informative… Your suggestions will improve anyone who wants their magic to have more impact” “More seasoned magicians will know much of what is here… it is a book written with the less experienced magician, but not the complete beginner, in mind” “I have to say it has vastly improved my performances” “Written in… a style that is, at once, agreeable and comfortable to follow along with” “This has the makings of an important contribution to the teachings of performance magic” “I truly enjoyed the book” “The format was carefully thought out and served the subject well” “I gained quite a bit just from the reading, and I look forward to gaining even more from it as I begin along the path of following the steps outlined in this work” Thank you all, keep them coming Liam Gilbert

I have just received the following e-mail. I hope Brian does not mind me posting his kind words here:
_____________________ Hi Liam, Just finished reading your book. A little background on me: My Uncle was a charter member of the Magic Castle and I've been performing magic since 2nd grade (I'm 32 now). I knew early on that I never wanted magic to be my fulltime job. As a syndicated cartoonist and screenwriter, magic is still my one pure art, by that I mean I only do it out of passion. That being said I think your book is a MUST for every performer. Many of the new breed of magicians have become "consumers", focusing on the newest effect, the most commercial effects and on doing what they saw on TV. They're missing the point. Much like American Idol contestants, they only see the glory and have no understanding of the work it takes to achieve that glory. They forget that Blaine pretty much followed what you've outlined in your book. He's not just a guy performing the latest tricks he bought at the shop or online. Everything he does has been thought out, rehearsed, and then reworked again. Your book gets at the trenches of what it takes to be a magician. It's what separates the hobbyists and the pros. It's also what many don't want to hear -- that it takes a lot of work on a lot of levels. I truly hope your book gets out there. It can only help grow the art we love. Cheers, Brian Anderson http://www.dogeatdoug.com _____________________
