I thought it might be interesting to start a thread with the simple idea of stating one simple quote that really changed the way you think about your magic business. This quote can be something you heard from someone else or a quote you created yourself.
The idea is to post the quote here and then give a brief discription on what it means and how it has effected your magic business in a positive fashion. I think sharing these quotes and their meanings and by showing examples, we can all possibly learn a great deal from them. I have several I have posted around my house and in my performance cases that are there to help me remind myself of certain business things I should never forget. I think sharing them here will allow us to really get a great list of quotes that not only show the quote but explain why and how they have directly helped your business to grow. I will get it started with a quote I heard from someone else but modified over the years to make it easier for me to remember. It goes like this: " Failure is only failure if you fail to learn from the experience. If you do learn, then failure is really just a stepping stone to success" This is one that really hits home with me and one I resight a lot over the years. I think a lot of folks do not realize that when it comes to your magic business and your marketing, you will fail. It is bound to happen. The problem is people view failure in the wrong way. Instead of thinking in negative terms to hurt your business, view failure as a way to learn. Try and study it and figure out why it failed. What did you do that you could do differently? What did you learn from what happened that can be changed next time around? Even if you learn one thing from a failed business attempt, that is one thing you did not know before you started. hence you then have made progress even through failure. I hope others will chime in here with their own business-minded quotes and explain what they mean to you. I think this could have a lot of great value to us all by sharing these quotes and explanations in this thread. I hope you may agree and I look forward to reading your thoughts and ideas. Kyle

The most practical quote I think of often is Woody Allen,
"80% of success is just showing up." Thanks, Richard |

Great stuff. I also like a simple quote I remind myself of which is simply....
"you will never know unless you ask." The power of simply asking can sometimes reard you in ways you had not thought of. Many times I was afraid to ask and now I find myself simply asking more often and getting what I am asking for. You never know unless you ask. Kyle

Hehehe wonderful stuff Al. I also really like that Oprah line. It does mean a lot when one thinks about it. In a way it can mean you sometimes have to be willing to take that first step and fail a few times before you actually get to where you want to be.
It kind of reminds me of a classic quote that goes something like, "The hardest part of any long journey is simply taking that very first step." Kyle

"You are tarnishing the image of real estate professionals."
That was the one true act of magic in my life. And it made me realize which business to stay in and which to get out of. |

That's pretty good. I did some street magic one Christmas season to raise some charity money. I was dressed nicely and made sure the people watching clearly understood that the money they were giving was going directly to the charity. The next day at my day job, my boss told me how upset he was to have seen "one of his people begging on the streets like some kind of bum!" He then asked me a very revealing question, "Don't you have any pride in yourself? I don't understand how anyone could do something like that unless they had no other choice."
The revealing part was that not only did I not identify myself with being "one of his people," but that I felt much more pride (if that's the correct word) from doing those street shows than I ever did from my day job. I also realized he was right in one sense, I really didn't have a choice about it. Not because of lack of money or desperation, but because of love and contribution. Thanks, Richard |

In an interview several years ago, Steve Martin was aked what it took to be successful in show business. His answer was, "Be so good they can't ignore you."
I recite that to myself every single day. |

Since Wayne mentioned Tony Robbins: He has a little pocket sized book of quotes, but I can't remember the title. ("Advice from a friend" or something like that)It's not pointed out in the book, but it is 365 pages and can be used as a quote-a-day source. There is some good stuff in that.
Thanks, Richard (And don't forget Stan Kramien's "No Dough, No Show!" It's not really motivational, but I get a smile everytime I think of it. ) |
