Here's my way to get around the gift certificate thing:
I have the precdition made up with the name from one of the menus. Essentially just copied the predictions that come with the package into MS Publisher, and copied the logo from one of the menus (don't forget to add the "secret code" at the bottom). I go through the routine, choosing the different dishes, etc. After the total is arrived at, I force the matching menu: "While we have chosen different portions of the meal from different restaurants at different prices, in would be a big pain to have one course, then have to drive to another restaurant for the next course, and so on. So, taking my cue from many of the local supermarkets, I have talked each of these restaurants into price-matching. So you can get the meal you've chosen at the price you came up with. Carla, please pick up any two menus. Great, Frank, pick up the two that are left and hand me one of them." Obviously, it's Magician's Choice. So now, they open the envelope with the Gift certificate, which has the exact total amount, as well as the selected restaurant. I like the idea of the to-go box with the fortune cookise, too. Maybe I'll try it with "marked" cookies--Two could be fun, like, "You will have assisted an incredibly attractive magician by the time you read this" and "You are about to be amazed!" Then the third one would read "Your party of four will choose to eat at the Who Flung Dung Restaurant." The last one: "Your party will select a number of items from a number of menus totaling X amount." Yeah, I think I like that a lot!

I came across this thread very late. 9 months after the last post. After reading the other posts I decided to blow the dust of my Sampler and try it a few times over the weekend. It went over very well each time. The only down side was that 20 minutes later they still hungry for more and wanted to see it again.

As an older USA citizen who used the samper in the menu form -- and the principle for corporate work (parts order lists for machines, inks and materials for t-shirt screen printers) I found one major problem with SS --
the state of education in America. Every now and then I hit upon a victim who could not add...and/or was insistent that his or her total was correct......... One solution -- as above -- was to issue a calculator and hope they used the right button -- and then I ran into people who needed instruction on how to use a calaculator......Moving the addition to a blackboard on stage removed too much feeling from the routine -- and added more props. I eventually dropped the generalized sampler routine from my non-corporate shows and kept the idea with the lists. But I would like to use it again (have 2 copies of Lee Earle's version) BUT want to find a good FUN out for when the addition comes out wrong because the spectator did not add correctly. I do not want to be a schoolteacher at that moment --and prefer not to make fun of the person's mistake. All suggestions welcome -- OUT- OUT ***ed error (and the Chow Mein spot on my tie.)

In it he mentions that these jokes are what really makes the routine go over so well. No offense to Mr. Earl but you can skip every one of his questionable jokes and it will still go over well. I have performed this a couple of times in the past as well as at a party two weeks ago (without using a single joke of his or resorting to speaking in a Chinese accent!) and am still hearing about how amazing it was...and how could I have a gift certificate with the exact amount of the spectators chosen meal? Just my two cents. |
