Hi, I'm looking to update my knowledge (It seems I've missed out on quite a few developments in the last 10 years!) and am looking to subscribe to a few periodicals.
Could any members help me out by recommending magazines specific to the field of stage magic? I'm looking for ones which include routines as well as news, or even just routines/effects. I live in England, but they don't have to be U.K. magazines as long as it is possible to get them sent to the U.K. Alexander |

There is no such thing to my knowledge for Stage Magic or stand-up presentations. Close-up has dominated the market because of cost and selling price, and of course the hobbyist.
When it comes to stage magic, many magicians make a good living from this and keep their secrets and presentations to themselves. I am interested in your statement that you have missed out on some developements, may I ask what these are? There has not been a new stage effect in a very long time. |

Are there even any publications that specialize in one area of magic?? Many books and DVDs/videos, but no periodicals that I know of. I too would like to know about the statement made regarding missed developements. Are you looking for a publication on how the illusions are done? If that is the case wmhegbli said it all. Any magic organization has their own publication for their members but little is shown in them.

If you don't have access to the originals, I would recommend getting the new book which compiles Jim Steinmeyer's "Conjuring" columns from MAGIC magazine. There were a good number of stage/platform effects in that run. We even marketed one or two (with Jim's permission, of course!)
For the life of me I can't recall the exact title- "The complete collected Conjuring" or something like that... man, getting old is a pain!

That statement was inspired by reading discussions in the coin magic section and I have posted a similar question there and in the close-up section. While I do have a reasonable knowledge of various fields of magical technique (from books and experimentation etc.), I am relatively ignorant of what is going on in the magic "scene". I am learning more of this from the internet and sites such as this, but the internet can be a labour intensive means of gathering information and can eat into time which could be better spent developing and practicing routines. I asked the question to see what publications there may be which would give me an idea of what was happenning in my areas of interest. To answer the question regarding illusions, I am not looking to include large illusions in my act at this stage. I have a limited knowledge of the workings of illusions and, like many magicians, am curious to expand my knowledge, but this is not currently a priority for me at the moment. Dave, thanks for the suggestion! I may look into the Steinmeyer articles when time and funds allow On a side note, I saw Losander give a lecture on Tuesday and it was fantastic. The floating bubbles (doesn't sound like a magical effect at first!) were beautiful. A brilliant application of old priciples to create a new twist. It is not possible to buy a floating ball which is as beautiful as a bubble. Very clever. It goes without saying that the floating table was brilliant. He finished with that and had the admiration (and endless applause) of everyone in the room. A masterpiece. Alexander |
