Just thought I'd pass on a little story of something that happened to me this week while cleaning my cages. I'm usually very careful about opening the cage doors while I'm cleaning even though my birds are content to stay inside, but here's what happened yesterday.
I opened one of the cages and started to use the vacuum cleaner as always and one of my "perfect" birds became a missile, flying straight out of the cage and out the garage door. Now usually I keep the door closed while cleaning but this time I just forgot. Anyway, the dove flew out and circled the yard twice. My front yard is about 100' by 75' surrounded by trees. After circling, she landed on the ground, rested a minute and took off again right into a tree. Well, I was looking at losing a bird and since there was nothing I could do, I turned to go back into the garage. This must have been a signal because "snowball" left the tree and flew directly onto my shoulder, lifted one wing straight up, looked at me and then flew back into the garage and into her cage. I've been doing dove magic for a long time but have never seen anything like this before. She's never been trained to do the fly back so it was quite a surprise. Now if I could just get her to do that all the time, I'd have a new routine for my act. Bottom line is that a disaster turned into a happy ending.

Steve that just made me choke on a bagel.. and cream cheese come out of my nose.. thanks.
Nice story Dave. I once had one of my guys land on my window sill while it was open... I dove and grabbed her with one hand. I think I cracked a rib. |

That's incredble David. And incredibly good news.
Perhaps if you could transport the tree to your stage site next time, your dove may just do it "again", in front of a live audinece. Think about it.... but not for too long. Again, I am very happy to hear how Snowball chose to resolve this situation. It's a sure thing that she does not peck the hand that feeds her. Talk about creating a "bond" between person and bird! Did any of your family members happen to photograph this magical occurance? Now if you would have told us that you flew up into the tree to get your dove, that would have put you amongst the ranks of Dick Van Dyke, Marry Poppins and other great celebs. And the moral of this story is... ________ ?? In any event, take care David, and congratulations on a great finale! Jonathan

Dave,
That one is a happy ending. Usually once they find a tree, they don't come back. So you are a real magician! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Jonathan, the moral of the story as I see it is, " don't be stupid, close the door"
Hmmm, take the tree with me. Now that has possibilities!

Dave,
I'm glad it turned out so well. I've been guilty of the open cage door before. Once I closed the door to one of my Netherland Dwarf's hutches, but forgot to latch it. The bunny escaped, and I searched all over. I actually found her 2 days later and she seemed fine. I was so happy and I couldn't believe she was ok. However, I found her dead in the hutch the following morning. I felt afwul, to say the least. I'm glad your dove came home and it was a happy ending. Regan

The main thing, David, is that you now have your dove back, safe and sound. And that you've now permanently sealed-off your garage door. I hope the car is on the outside... but not up in the tree! Best. Jonathan

Some time ago I sent you some information about research on bird intelligence. I could not help thinking about that when I read you wonderful post. I choose to think that “snowball” looked around at the trees and looked at your shoulder and made a thoughtful decision. Perhaps “snowball” knew that you care for it’s safety and feed it, and follows it’s hart. Bob |

Yes Bob, I did receive the information you sent and still have it. Thanks. I'd like to think the dove came back because of the care I give it but in this case, I think I was just lucky. Regardless of the reason, I'm just glad to have snowball back.

If you have enough doves some will get out some time. If they are outdoors, a trick that has worked about half the time for me is to extend the perch in the cage outside the cage. After dark, often you will find the dove sleeping on the perch getting as close to home as it can. (Do not cut on the lights to catch it! Just catch it and put it back into its cage.)

Earlier this year I was performing on an island called Belle Isle in the Detroit River. My dove was on his perch. A gust of wind came toward my bird, Silky. He flew onto a plastic bag floating on the river. Instead of me jumping in the river I used a females fishing net to reach in to get Silky back. He is doing good.

We are not all so lucky. I lost one once. He was a beautiful pied, speckled like a Dalmatian. The pied's always seem bit more "flighty" than the solid white birds. One morning, he shot out of the outdoor aviary and left his pied mate behind. I was shocked at his ability to fly SO very well. He soared like a hawk! I thought he would come back because of his mate. I tried everything I knew how to coax him back but to no avail.
He was lost in late spring in Memphis and must have learned to survive, because I saw him on several occasions for a few years after that. Neighbors told me they would see him eating at their bird feeders. He took up with a bunch of wild doves, so I guess he is happy. His speckles may provide him camouflage from red tails that feed on pigeons in the city. So if you are ever in Midtown Memphis and see a speckled dove flying about, his name is Harley. Yeah, I know...Born to be wild.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.
