This is not a JOKE, researcher have found a way to make people invisible for real and say within 18 months they will have a real life cloak of invisiblity. If this comes out forget about the vanishing girl illusions, as everyone will assume you have one of those expensive cloaks of invisibility.
If you think I'm making this up read the article on CNN. This is for real. Amazing to say the least. I wonder what they will cost or if they will keep it out of hands of the average person to prevent robbery and other things by being invisible. http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/05/25/invis......dex.html Yes, you could actually make someone invisible as long as someone wears a cloak made of this material," said Patanjali Parimi, a Northeastern University physicist and design engineer at Chelton Microwave Corp. in Bolton, Massachusetts |

Kinda interesting, IF it were to actually work in any of our lifetimes, it would be gobbled up by the military pretty quick and out of any of our reach for a really really long time. I think we magicians would be safe making people vanish on stage
Side note, I remember reading something a few years ago about how scientist have actually teleported something (a single cell). Another side note, this one is not quite as magical, but on Discovery (or something like that) they were showing some military armor, that makes someone disappear like the Predator aliens (form the movies). They showed a prototype, it was pretty cool, and did look kinda like the movie effect. There was (probably thousands) a sensor on the back (or on the side...wherever) and a corosponding sensor on the opposite side of the person. The sensor on the back read what color it should project to the sensor on the front (and vice versa) and when you looked at it you saw the colors that you should be seeing. The soldier had these sensors all around his body. He was standing in front of foilage and trees, so the illusion did not have to be really good to look pretty good... And a real long time ago, I saw another Discovery show, that they recreated the effect from the Abyss (movie) where the water was moving around above the floor through the base. This was really cool, it was some sort of an optical illusion. The water actually was being shot up into the air from the floor and I think they used a laser and a strobe (or something???) and it APPEARED as if the water was just floating there...This could be a really cool magic effect! If anyone else remembers this (10 years ago) or has any info on it, let me know.. Or I could have just been dreaming. scott |

I think this will be more like a mirror image thing... But if you look closely the eye would discover such...
just my opinion today...

I think people are jumping to a lot of wild conclusions here without understanding what the scientists are actually saying (the major culprits being the media, who always want a good story regardless of the facts).
Although the media reports use eye-catching terms like "Star Trek cloaking" technology or "Harry Potter cloaks", if you see what the scientists are actually saying they are talking about something rather different. The suggestion is it is theoretically possible to make CERTAIN objects effectively invisible to CERTAIN observers in CERTAIN VERY SPECIFIC situations. The technique, known as "anomalous localised resonance", is likely to vary in effectiveness with variations in the frequencies of light, so in real life it may only make some things partially disappear. Then you need to read what they're saying about the size of objects - the scientists are currently talking in terms of being able to make specs of dust invisible. Although there are some suggestions that it might work with larger objects that is only a possibility and none of the scientists are really suggesting they will be able to make invisibility cloaks (or, for that matter, Romulan cloaking devices!) In any case it is only a theory at the moment and large scale cloaking is likely to remain that way for a while yet (waaaayyyy longer than 18 months). In other words, this much like the misplaced excitement over teleportation, which Scott referred to. Quote:
Side note, I remember reading something a few years ago about how scientist have actually teleported something (a single cell). Actually I think it was smaller and even less impressive than that. My memory is vague on this but I think it was in the realms of quantum theory and they were talking about sub-atomic particles appearing to teleport over short distances... and even then they'd only got as far as being able to talk about APPEARING to teleport. So the technology for "real" magic is still a long way off. However... Quote:
This shows that cruder technology, such as camouflage, is getting more sophisticated and might provide ideas for magicians (which would be only fair given that Maskelyne took magician's ideas and applied them to military camouflage). Even here, it's important to note the bit about this new camouflage technology only working really well in particular circumstances - such as standing in front of foliage - where the illusion didn't have to be that good to be effective. Think about that technology a bit more and you'll realise that it's best when you're hiding from a static observer and the effect only has to work along one line of sight. It has severe limitations as soon as the person you're trying to hide from is moving. Sensors and emitters would then need to work (and be synchonised) over a range of angles and you would need to find a way to minimise the parallax effect caused by a body of any significant size. I guess it might happen one day but we're still a long way from James Bond's vanishing Aston Martin car. (gosh, I now feel like a terrible spoilsport) Mark |

I havn't looked at the link yet but I saw something like this in japan. It was a coat that displayed the image behind the person wearing the coat onto the front of the coat.
It looked like you were looking right through the person and seeing the action behind them. You actually could see "through" them, but it was an image the coat was displaying. And it was not a screen sewen on it was the material the coat was made from. Looked very cool. |

Roth, it was a hoax- there were two types of pictures involved, if I remember correctly. One was just a photoshop effect, and definately not reproducable in the real world. The other was cloth which had a design of legs and panties painted on, to give the illusion of transparent clothing. I think you saw the first one.
By the way, magicians have been able to do what the article describes (bend light around an object) for centuries now. And we can do it a lot more cheaply than scientists can

Could have been a trick, but you do know Japan is an easy two years ahead of most countrys including the U.S. in electronic technology. |

Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

It was not a hoax as laci200 posted in his link but it requires a projector and other apparatus to work. It is not really invisible as you can not just put on the coat and be invisible. Not to mention that you are only partially hidden when in invisible mode you can still see the person. Check out this site for more info http://science.howstuffworks.com/invisibility-cloak.htm .JS

Another option is a color that doesn't register well on the brain. I had a silver car, years ago, and I'd never been run off the road or hit by other cars more times than when I drove this car. As long as I live, I'll never drive a silver car.

It says, "Scientists not involved in the work ..." which could mean wacko fringe scientists. Just because someone is a students of physics doesn't mean they are any more or less gullible, wishful, or hopeful than the rest of us.
Don't hold your breath. I'd still work on any invisibility illusions you have in mind; I doubt there'll be any breakthroughs in our lifetime. |

There is already a deceptive base wich you can look trough. But that works with a very old principle.. Such a cloth will not be made for real in the next years.... Till then we have to do it by magic.... Lol.

Mac King has been using his rain coat of invisability for years in his Vegas show. I wish scientists would quit trying to steal out acts.
Of course the government is interested in this project. Any way of spying on people gets a green light for funding. Not like the government has anything better to do with our money. Just a reminder quarterly taxes are due in a few weeks. |

This is all theory. IF it was ever successfully created we would never have a chance to own it. Never. The government and military would use it for their
own uses. Guaranteed.
