Wow -- a bit blustery out there today. Digital flurries everywhere!
Hi. I don’t know if I can rightfully define myself as a magician at this point. I only know one trick, and it is a pretty much self-working illusion, involving two paperclips and a dollar bill. I’m slowly (hopefully surely) working my way up to disappearing knots, and the French drop. I’d really like to learn a bit more about illusions involving scarves. It crossed my mind recently that the chameleon illusion might incorporate well into some of the veil-work for my bellydance routines. I don’t know enough about “the dancing cane” to know if I could adapt it for use in a traditional cane dance or not... As far as professional influences go, I grew up adoring the work of Tina Lenert, the Blackstones, and Doug Henning – among others. Though it doesn’t exactly fall into the realm of traditional magic, I think that Cirque du Soleil is quite magical, and I admire their approach to showmanship. I don’t envision myself becoming a grand illusionist, but I do hope to bring some magic/wonder/happiness to my friends and loved ones. I’ve looked around at various message boards, and this one looked like a friendly place to learn, and to exchange ideas with others of similar interests. |

Hello lilfoxy and welcome to the Magic Café. All of us started out with just one trick so don't worry. Knowing and performing one trick well is better than knowing a lot of effects and doing them badly. I've never seen a belly dancing magician so maybe you've found a niche. Enjoy yourself here and don't be afraid to ask questions. That's why we're here.

Hi Lilfoxy
Welcome to the Café. Belly Dancing with a dancing cane had been tried in Turkey with a belly dancers'group. It was not so much popular. you both spoil the trick and the company is so much limited. for you can not use one hand properly. For me forget about it. let the dancing cane remain as a trick.. Magic with scarves may be of some help. Encyclopedia of Silk magic -3 volumes may be a fine source.Let me serve you a cup of strong Turkish coffee on my bill.

Hello Dave!
Among dancers, there is a stern respect for the dance form itself, so I have to be careful not to break faith with the traditions. Hopefully I will find a few illusions that will/would lend themselves enhancing the meaning or beauty of a given dance. If I find that I can’t put magic and the dance together…Well, maybe I will dance, then perform the magic, then dance… I’m just starting in magic, so I will have to see. Many thanks to you for welcoming me here, and for the encouragement! |

Hello Harry!
You were making money with only four illusions to start?! Wow! I think you must be very self-effacing – that your natural ability for showmanship must be excellent! The more I read on this board, and the more websites of regular café members I visit…the more I realize how much there is to learn. Thank you for the kind welcome! |

Hello OZLEN TUNCER / TORA !
It’s true, the dance has a magic all of its own…I wouldn’t want to do anything that distracted from the beauty of the dance. Thank you for the delicious coffee, for the most welcome information about the cane illusion not working well with cane dancing, and for suggesting the silk magic book – I think this information will be of great help to me. |

Quote: hello lilfoxy1 in answer to your question and after reading the rest of the comments posted to you all I can say as a working magician is that you should try what ever works for you and do not be afraid to try something new. Just because it has either not been tried before or has not worked before it does not mean that you could not make your dance and magic with certain props work together. Try something new and suprise us all with your ideas, you never know you could be the next Houdini, Cardini or Lilfoxini On 2002-12-08 16:28, lilfoxy1 wrote:

Hi “Invisible Ink”!
Yes, I do feel a bit uncertain of myself, because this is all very new, and I don’t know anyone in my regular life who is a practicing illusionist. I’m good at learning things on my own, but am used to having at least one or two allies. That was the way it was when I started dancing! A small group of us with one teacher, and then, after our teacher retired, I kept going on my own when most of the other girls quit. But this is different – there really aren’t any magicians where I live! I’m really on my own this time. I’m not having trouble finding information, and online outlets, but I have no idea of how to go about discerning what “the good stuff” is. There are so many videos and tricks out there! I’m reluctant to waste money on stuff that I can’t even hold in my hand before buying. It’s like the Blaine book; I almost bought it, then heard that the book was mostly an autobiographical work, rather than a primer-text for budding illusionists (for example, no secrets of levitation revealed). Thank you for bolstering my courage! Respectfully, “lilfoxini” |

Hi Lil,
Yes, dancing and magic do go together. There are a lot of performers who studied dancing. Dancing helps you to move properly on Stage. My idol performer is Jeff McBride and I am going to quote him here as I strongly believe in this. Do not even stop with only magic and dancing. Try to learn as many things as possible. They will help you to get your magic to a higher level. I study drama too, and I do not regret it. Jeff McBride is a magician and he studied, drumming, drama, miming, ballet, martial arts... and I do not know what else. Then he weaves all these together and the final result is an awesome and a truly magical one. If you have never seen him perform, just check his website (www.mcbridemagic.com) for something brief. You had some great influences too. Good Luck on this wonderful journey to performing wonderful magic, and do not get dihearted. It is not going to be easy, but the results will be great, and worth it. See you around (I am mostly in the fire, spooky and close-up s sections) Ivan When I start talking about magic, I always get carried away. I hope I am not annoying.
Yours,
Ivan |
