I've gone to Bob's conventions many many times. Years ago this was "The Convention" in the area. Sadly it is no where near what it once was. Many of the attendees go simply cause of the lack of such conventions in the area. Which is a shame since I'm told that the philadelphia SAM is rather large.
Without some filler if one was not interested in the auction then the time from 10 to 1pm or so is wasted time. As I stated in a previous post, you can visit every dealer in about an hour or so, 2-3pm lecture time is an hour most will attend from then on it's mingle here and there for a stage show that is about 5 hours later. Thus the reason for more filler time. I've gone the last 4 or so and each time left by 4pm and didn't return for the show. $30 to enter for a few hours, then include gas money, lunch money, your up to near $60.00. This ultimately hurts the dealers who travel such as Denny Haney who is one of the few reasons why I still attend. He's a great guy and always helpful. RandyM |

Randy,
It's obvious you don't like Bob Little for whatever reason. Bob's daughter gets his email, however, Bob is away at so many conventions or overseas, he can't get to respond and when he does, he does it with a phone call, it's his way. It is easier to get a hold of Bob by phone call. Every day he accesses his answering machine from where ever he is at. Bob chooses not to use a computer, which is common with lot of senior citizens, and perfers voice contact, it's his way he has been doing it for years. As for Denny Haney, he goes to this convention, for reasons you many never understand. It definately is not for the concept of making lots of money. Denny has many friends in this area, and it is more of a get together with those friends. Many attendees do a lot of mail order from Denny, and it's in Denny's best interest to kept in contact with those clients in this area. (Basic Marketing 101) As President-elect of the Philadelphia SAM (2006-2007), many members from that organization do attend, quite a few work that day and can't make it. We are 100 members strong and I would say at least one-third do attend, and about half of the regular attendees do attend. That says a lot for our club and thier support for one of it's life long members. If you are so unhappy with this one-day convention, then please don't go. Why you want to turn others away, and for whatever hidden reason escapes me? Why you can't see that others do like this convention and the way it is run also escapes me. You made your point over and over. Bob may not be around next year, so I enjoy the time I have with him because he has done so much for so many, I find his company enjoyable, his choice of dealers reasonable and very sociable, his comical antics laughable, his champange thirst quenching, his chocolate and cake fattening, and his choice of entertainment refreshing. I think the bottom line here guys is that everyone knows what Super Sunday is like. Conventions are expensive and the cost of acts is going up all the time yet the admission cost stays the same at $30. I believe a few years ago it was only $25 and a $5 increase isn't bad for what you get. Multiple dealers in one room, an auction, a lecture and a stage show. The cost of a show alone would run about the same or more in most venues. A few years ago, lecutures at a club would cost about $150 plus a hotel room but today the minimum is $250 plus the room, the cost of which has also risen. Still, the cost of Super Sunday remains at $30.
Noone says you have to be there when the doors open at 10. The schedule is about he same each year so if the idle team bothers you, don't come a early. Change is good however, Bob Little's Super Sunday is a tradition. Those that come back year after year, come because of what it is knowing what to expect. As has been mentioned, Super Sunday will come to an end sooner that we would like and another tradition will be lost. I think we should just accept what it is and enjoy it while we have it.

Bob Little is my primary supplier
He is over 100 years old, and is not likely to step into the 21st century any time soon. I just wish that he did not have less dealers every year. I will not name those dealer that I'm speaking of, but I have come to rely on their specialty items that are no longer available at Super Sunday. Bob Little's Super Sunday gets a little smaller, and less super every year? Al Angello

Greetings:
As one who runs a three day convention, maybe I can shed some light on some of the questions posed above. The cost of running any convention is far more than many could imagine. The hotels keep going up year after year, entertainment costs more year after year, advertising costs keep going up and in many cases magazine ads don't bring anyone in to justify their expense. That is just the tip of the iceburg, I'm sure many would like to see certain lecturers, or performers at a convention, but get a price from these guys and you will find it just about impossible. We have had many ask for a certain Children's entertainer for our convention, so we contacted him, and this was his list of wants: 4 dealers tables, 3 registrations, hotel for the 3 days plus the day before and after, and $1,500. Needless to say, that particular performer will not work our convention. I'm sure many people would like to see the big names that are in the magazines, but unless they are coming through the area, the chances of getting them are slim at a workable cost. Now I am not saying that they should work for nothing, but there is a budget with any convention that needs to be maintained in order for the convention to continue. I have also heard people comment that there is no convention in their area where they can go see a lecturer, a show and hang with other magicians, and then these same people when told about a convention like Bob's will say that it is too far to travel, or they are only interested in doves or cards and there is not enough of it at the convention etc. Believe me I have heard it all. I especially liked the guy in my area who has never attended my convention, tell me that last year it was too hot for him to drive from Baltimore to Aberdeen. If you want conventions like Bob's and others like mine, and Kutztown, and more to continue, then they need support. Years ago magicians would jump at the opportunity to go to any convention, and you did not care who was performing, or lecturing, because you knew it was going to be magic day and night. But I guess in our modern world today we are jadded by the push of a computer button, or the ease of popping in a DVD, that many would rather sit back and wait till the conventions are gone. Both conventions and Brick and Mortar Magic Shops share something in common, if people do not support either, then where will the new magicians of the future learn from when they are both gone. We attend Bob's convention not to make a ton of money, because let's face it, contrary to what many believe, being a magic dealer will never make you a millionaire. We attend to visit with friends, to relax from the daily grind and to support Bob. To sum it up: Attend a Lecture - well worth the $30 See an Evening Show - also well worth the $30 Enjoy a fun Auction - fits in that same category as well To see our Friends and Enjoy a Relaxing Day ----PRICELESS! Just my two cents Marty |

A-MEN to that. So nicely stated Marty and I agree 100%. As long as Bob has the convention, I will always be in attendance. It is a tradition for me and Bob is not only a good friend, but he supports our local SYM club and has for years. His generosity is simply amazing and I go to have a great time with friends and sharing magic for a full day and night. That to me is well worth $30 any day of the week.

Add on top of this the number of good conventions and conferences...
For Starter... the big guys, in the USA (Not counting Blackpool, FISM, and others) Las Vegas Invitational, SAM IBM Abbotts KIDabra Other Great Conventions Hank Lees MAES Funarama SCAM Winter Carnival And this doesn't even scratch the surface of the many others out there, llike Bob Little's Super Sunday. As Marty said above, what I go for is "Priceless". I must pick and choose carefully, so a $30 one day convention is really a great savings for me. I'll spend 100 times that at KIDabra.

Dennis,
How in the world you draw a conclusion that I don't like Bob Little is beyond me! Let me be Crystal Clear, I appreciate Bob Little, I happen to enjoy talking to him when he has the time, and I applaud him for his efforts. With that said, I stand behind my posts which simply suggest better time management. It wouldn't hurt and I'm sure will help tremendously if for instance, you take the hours between 4pm-6pm , give some of these guys an opportunity to perform some closeup (or whatever) and have our more experienced guys critique or applaud one's efforts. I'm sure you will agree with such a turn out of seasoned guys (Denny, Martini, Bob, the local performers from the local SAM, etc could help tremendously, open up conversation , or develop an up and coming rising star out there. Some guys who are very talented, have no idea what SAM is. This suggestion also would not come at any addtional cost to Bob, and can free him up to take a quick break and enjoy it too. Set up a table next to the dealers and let the newbies or hobbyists know about SAM! I met one fella a couple years back who blew my socks off and after some conversation he had no idea what SAM was and told me he performs for mainly friends and family as a hobby from his day job. Bob can take my suggestions or not, it's his show and has been for many years, but to say " It's obvious I don't like Bob Little" is ridiculous. Do I think the local SAM can do better or at least take advantage of a yearly convention in our local area? The answer is YES! I'm quite sure membership will rise. I'm also quite sure you have some rather new members that are quite talented who would love an opportunity to be viewed by seasoned members. RandyM |

I think I'm the only one here that understands RandyM
LISTEN closely - no one here said they dislike Bob,so please don't put words in other peoples mouths. You guys remind me of the local small town bar patron, you know the bar that only has 5 people in it (the regulars)10 years ago the bar was packed every night you couldn't get a seat now there is only five of you left (the loyal patron)while evrybody left because they were tired of the same thing everynight. Listen being loyal to Bob is great, but there are people out there that don't know Bob or don't care to know Bob or what have ya. To keep a convention striving you need young blood just as you need old blood you know magicians helping magicians. Now the cost of convention - there are a lot of things you can do to pump up the convention another notch or two that don't cost money at all. It's called creative thinking. Dennis you have a lot of friends that come to Super sunday, what about the guy who doesn't know anybody there, as president of you local SAM what are you doing about that? Martini - the dealers always complained through the years that there is TOO many dealers. Now I understand there point , the more dealers the less money you make. But I also believe if you have a good product you will sell a lot. the more dealers benefit the paying customer.(I know,I know) you pay and for your tables but it still comes back to a good product and being a good salesperson. |

Randy M & Inidyls,
I spoke to Bob tonight and voiced your concerns. Yes, we may not agree, but as a friend of Bobs and it is the right thing to do, since Bob does respect my opinion, he has taken action. He said he will add two new dealers, and he has a table set up for those who want to demo their skills during this lull period. Yes, there is a lot of talent just walking around, now they can perform if they so choose. I know it is not a perfect situation, but one never knows who may be discovered during this free time. Randy M & Inidyls, give it a try. If anyone who chooses to do this, just give consideration to others who also might want to perform. Also respect the performance of the entertainers scheduled, and avoid performing while they are on stage. I hope this added feature is used properly and becomes a standard filler during those lull period. There should be a time sheet and each person signs up for a 10 minute time slot period. There also needs to be a break for dinner so the evening show can be set up. As for who lectures, Bob turns that over to Mike Miller, who must work within the budget given to him. If you got other constructive suggestions, within reason, I will present it to Bob, however, this year is pretty much set, except for the added additions mentioned above. Dennis

There are LESS dealers, and there have been less dealers for about three or four years, I will not name names. If you attended Super Sunday's in the past think of the most popular dealers, they are the ones who I am speaking of. They still sell at other magic conventions, and why they no longer go to Super Sunday is for them to say. It is getting smaller, and less super every year. I will attend June 25th because I'm an old fogie like Bob. Dennis if you don't know who I'm speaking of ask Bob.

Dennis,
It was kind of you to discuss this with Bob. I do believe this will help with filler time. It's also an opportunity for the local SAM to advise just who they are for the newbies out there. It's also a nice opportunity for those more experienced guys to give the younger or newer guys to the art an opportunity to ask questions whether it be on performance, sleights, audience management etc. Kid shows for instance , I understand, is your speciality. The advice or suggestions you could offer would be quite valuable to the newbie out there. Things that took you years to understand or how to avoid certain mistakes could be a big help. The seasoned guys sometimes forget just how helpful they can be. It is my hope this addition is welcomed. I suppose we will know in a couple weeks. If not, well at least we made an attempt to make it even better. RandyM |
