I am interested in doing a multiplying bottle routine and am looking for a good set of bottles and tubes. Is anyone familiar with the Abbott's set? Since it is a fairly expensive set but no pictures are available, I thought I would seek an opinion here. I am especially interested in the Abbott's because they still come with chromed metal tubes, which I like much better than cardboard or having to go to the hardware store for PVC to make them. I would just like to know if the bottles look and work well. Thanks for any input.

I have not seen what they currently sell... but the early ones had a dull paint that didn't look like a glass bottle at all. However, you could always take them to an auto painting place and have them sprayed glossy black or dark brown. After the metal tubes scratch up your bottles you will wish you had pvc.

Thanks for the advice. So PVC IS better than metal!

You may want to look at a set from Harries. I have been using one for about 5 years now. The bottles look great. The tubes are cardboard though but have lasted through 5 years of rehearsals and performances so I have no complaints.

Abbott's is selling the Morrissey Products set of Multiplying Bottles. They have not manufactured their brand in 40 years.
http://www.morrisseymagic.com The original sets come with chrome tubes, but the current ones made by Morrissey come with spun aluminum tubes. |

I use the 9 bottle Harries set and I've closed every show with them for the last nine years. I have two sets and both the bottles and cardboard tubes are still in excellent shape.

I think you may have misunderstood my post. The Harries's bottles are spun aluminum and only the tubes are cardboard. And no, you can't make your own cardboard bottles. You would have an easier time selling ice to Eskomos than trying to pass off homemade cardboard bottles as real ones to an audience. |

Cut 2 thin strips of black felt and glue them on each end of each tube, this keeps the tubes from touching the bottles. We're getting ready to release our set soon and this was one of the improvements I made on the tubes. If you use a good glue like Gorilla Glue the felt strips will stay in place.
Some secrets just shouldn't be kept Try it, you'll be glad you did. Jake

Great idea, Jake. I'm tired of chipped paint on bottle shoulders.
I use two sets... one I repainted and relabeled as different liquor bottles, the other I painted black and used the labels from quart-sized IBC root beer bottles. They peel off the real thing easily, and if the adhesive remaining is not sufficient, a quick shot of spray adhesive will finish the job (on the label, not the bottle). Good for kid shows, or other times when liquor bottles are not appropriate. I think they are pretty deceptive, too, as no kid as close as 4-6 feet has ever commented on any of them being a fake. I also paint the inside of the neck the color of the cap in the event some of the audience can view the bottles from a downward angle. It helps camouflage the fact that they are "as they are". ~michael

Michael,
great idea also that you have. We've been working on hydrostatic labels with a company. Some are liquor, wine, soda and juice brands. We're working on different sizes to accomodate sets that are out there that don't match the ones we're making as well. This enables the performer to change labels on the fly to suit the audience they are peforming to. The labels of course are re-usable between changes We're also considering selling perforated sheet kits so peformers can design their own labels and print them on inkjet or color laser printers. Jake

How many bottles in the set you are releasing? Doug |
Pete Biro 1933 - 2018 18558 Posts |
The hot tip is to make two kinds of labels. One for adult use (wine) and one for kids (Cola)... and put them BOTH on the bottles, back to back so you can just turn the sets around depending on what kind of audience you are working for.
FYI the Himber trick where you had a large number of bottles and a case, and all but one vanished?... was created by Persi Diaconis using the thinking of DOUBLE FACED cards for the principle.

Doug,
we'll be releasing 2 sets, 1 regular Passe Passe set (3 bottles) and a Multiplying set of 9 bottles. If you want to do more than 9 bottles we will be selling extra production sets in sets of 3. Not sure how many want more than 9 bottles though Jake

Mad Jake:
Is this the set you were making for Stevens Magic? What is the retail price point? |

I just got back from a day trip to Chicago. I specifically went to Magic, Inc. to physically check out the set of Multiplying Bottles that they advertise on their Website here: http://www.magicinc.net/index.asp?PageAc......dID=2130
As you can see from checking the link, the bottles really look nice.... Well, guess what? They are, in my opinion, the nicest Multiplying Bottle value going right now!!! These are heavy-duty, professional quality, green anodized, not flimsy and painted bottles!!! I was so impressed, I bought a set of 12 for $180.00!!!! What a deal!!!!!....each set of bottles comes with a stack of three bottles and two tubes....and labels! Apparently, they found these in boxes in the back, and they are from the Frances Marshall era.......I'm not positive, but I'm guessing that based on the quality of these bottles that they MAY have been made by the original Rings and Things crew in St. Louis. Quality-wise, except for the plain Vs. gold bottle top, they look just like the Owens passe passe bottles pictured here: http://www.owenmagic.com/Club___Stage/Pa......lbottles Trust me on this: I believe that these are THE BEST VALUE IN MULTIPLYING BOTTLES TODAY!!! One thing though: They have a limited supply so, don't pass this up!!! |

Rainbo,
Is it possible to pour the liquid into the glass with your Magic Inc set? |
Fabio P Special user Rome - ITALY 554 Posts |
In my way of thinking the possibility to pour the liquid in the glass is very very strong such as the possibility at the end to change the place of the glass WITH the liquid. I wonder if Harry's Deluxe multiplying bottles is the only set which allows to pour the liquid
Thanks |

The bottles from Magic, Inc. don't have the capability to pour liquid built into them per se, however, I think the bottles can be easily modified to do that.
For an example of how to do this, see Richard Kaufman's Ron Wilson book, The Uncanny Scott. In the book, Ron details how he modified his set of multiplying bottles to do this. |
