If I had to choose one, I'd go with Vandy's list and settle for A Fistful of Dollars.

You're welcome, Vandy.
Btw me too I like those Trinity movies ( although I'm Italian I don't like particularly 'spaghetti' westerns, for many reasons, but those parodies are an exception ). They are not based on jokes or italian accents and the like ( as many other italian comedies ), so that also strangers can find them amusing.

All good choices guys...

I remember the oldie "Red Sun" (1972) ... starring (amongst others) Charles Bronson and Ursula Andress.
A western with a "spin on the ball".
An ancient Japanese sword is stolen from ambassadors on route.
The chase is on to return it. A great film.

I had the pleasure of visiting the site of several of the old "Spaghetti" westerns while stationed on Sardegna. I love exploring ruins and historical sites. Tooling down a side road off of the main highway about halfway up the island I spot this clump of buildings out in the middle of nowhere. What I found was an abandoned American Western town left to seed. Some fire damage to several buildings. No real structure to the buildings. According to one of my local friends, this was one of the "towns" used for Italian westerns, including two Clint Eastwood westerns. I always meant to go back to the films and compare. Never have. I'll have to see if I can dig up those pictures and post them.

That's interesting, Skip, I didn't know...I knew some italian western locations were in Spain, others in the Latium country, but not in Sardinia. Well, you know that island better than me, who never was in there !

And what about "The White Buffalo" ?
Unusual movie but an excellent one in my opinion...and very chilling : the Buffalo, brrrr ! A creation of our skilled Carlo Rambaldi.

I imagine, if this movie was released in the 50's, the trailer would have screamed "Soon on your screen, the most terrifying movie You ever saw !! Wild huntings !...Love !...Psychotic animals !!", lol

Galerius, Don't take that as gospel. This is what I was told by one of the locals who worked with me. He also told me that Eastwood and Fonda owned villas on the southern coast of the island. Don't know if that was true either. The abandoned "town" is in an area that is largely desert with small mountains and hills. As I said, I had once planned to compare the photos to the movies and never have. I'm still looking...we'll discover the truth together! Smile

I can't believe that no one has yet mentioned Terrence Hill and Bud Spencer. I've always loved their campy Italian "My Name is Trinity", "Trinity is Still My Name" and "Troublemakers" westerns. These will forever remain at the top of my favorite western list. One of the great unsung comedy team greats, to be sure! I wonder if they're out on DVD. Haven't thought about them in years!

:) Skip

Was "Trinity" the one that had the running gag of everyone explaining they were late to the rendevous because they thought a guy was following them? "Turned out he wasn't really following us, we was both just going the same way!"

Has anyone mentioned BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID? Except for the B.J. Thomas interlude, it's a pretty good movie.

They may not be true "westerns" but I also like THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE and QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER.

Great movie, and when Bogart is alone in the desert, racked by remorses, scary too.

If you like Westerns with "spin," consider "The Posse" with Kirk Douglas and Bruce Dern.

Hm, Quigley was a good one -- largely due to Alan Rickman's finely played antagonist to Selleck's spot-on archetypal turn as a cowboy.

Not sure if it qualifies as a "Western" per se, but I was in Best Buy over the week-end and picked up a neglected gem on DVD: "Emperor of the North" with Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine. Yeah, it misses the classic cowboy era by about 35 years or so, but with its brutal conflict between a repressive and sadistic authority figure and a live-free-or-die hobo, all set on a steam train heading West, maybe we can stretch the genre a bit, eh? Anyway, worth a look-see.

The Outlaw Josey Whales.
In loving memory of Hughie Thomasson 1952-2007.

You brought something beautiful to this world, you touched my heart, my soul and my life. You will be greatly missed.

Until we meet again “my old friend”.

My favorite is " Once Upon A Time In The West". Outstanding movie with a great musical score. I've loved that one for over 30 years.
