I know that this has been covered but I would like to sum it all up. If you had 3 effects to do for a children's show or birthday what would they be? I am not talking about ones you think or have heard work, I want to know the ones YOU do and work...

Mine are.
Top
#1 Rabbit in hat puppet
#2 Needle Thru Balloon Harry Balloondini
#3 The milkshake trick (Dan Harlen)

a) Run Rabbit Run ALWAYS got them screaming
b) Linking Rings where you get the birthday kid to help out
c) Production of chocolate chip cookies from a dove pan was the trick EVERY kid remembered and was my signature effect so to speak— at every return engagement it was the first thing kids said to me..."are you going to do the cookie trick?"

Without fail, EVERY show:

1) Bake a cake in the dove pan (although I like the cookie idea— easier to distribute)

2) Magic coloring book

3) Milk vanish and reproduction from kid's arm (milk pitcher and funnel).

I don't know how you can get more perfect entertainment from a kid's show.

  • Hippity-Hop-Rabbits or Fraidy Cat Rabbit
  • Production: Temple Screen
  • Disappearing Cane (The End Silk)

I start every kids' show with the Miser's Dream. I've said it many times before, but it bears repeating:
Kids don't think you're a "real" magician until you've pulled a coin from behind their ears.

This involves many kids, establishes you as a magician from the start, and— because of the subtle patter— let's me establish control of the room without the kids even realizing it. So everybody ends up happy, as they should!

Add to that:
The Magic Coloring Book
Plus gag wands: wobbly, nesting, bang, pop-away, etc.

And you've got the basis for a great kids' show.

My plan is to compile a list and post the results here. It will show how many of us use the same type of effect (the true working routines) or help someone who is looking to add proven routines. Thanks everyone for your help and keep adding to the list.

1. Rabbit Production from Drawer Box
2. Plastic egg with hole to real egg (Mark Wilson did this years ago, what was the actual name?)
3. Swallowing Balloon (depending on age, because 7 and under would try it)

For younger audiences (5-10) for me it's:
1. Silks and TT routine (my own)
2. Strat-0-Sphere
3. Stiff rope with a lot of audience participation.
Can't leave this one out: D-Lites

For older audiences 11-15
1. Silks and TT routine
2. Change bag with a large silk. (idea from John Zander)
3. Paper balls over the head (Slydini style, with variations) adding on juggling balls and anything lying around.

These work good for me.

Colouring Book...it's definitely a classic.

Milk Pitcher...making the milk disappear is great.

Tricksey Turvey Bottles (the same principles as the Crazy Crayon), though some parents get riled up because I use the old style bottle (similar to a beer bottle) with a big label that says Cherry Coke. Meh...can't please everyone.

Only three? Well OK, here's my list of the top three:

1. Run Monster Run (the original Cookie Monster version)
2. Paper Tear (I like the paper tear to top hat w/rabbit version)
3. Rocky (I'm surprised no one mentioned it yet)

And here are my honorable mentions (sorry, I could not keep it to three!):

Mis-made flag (It's always nice to have a flag in your show these days in the U.S.)
Axtell Bird routine
Smiley the Clown silk routine (b&w to color silk set by Duane Laflin)
